For some reason, I have spent time in the last week thinking about women I had blown off or rejected and wondering if I did the right thing. At the time , there seemed to be good reason to do so, mainly because they were very clingy and saw a lot more in the relationship then I did. A few years on though, I am wondering if I threw away a good opportunity. How do I get over this?

Compartmentalize it. It really isn't important, so label i that way in your mind. Easier said than done, but you can.

Eh I used to be like you. Letting seemingly good women pass me by. But then I remembered that it's never, EVER a good idea to go back to the past. What's done is done. You d be doing more harm than good by recontacting these women.

just let it go.

Try to use the past to your advantage , learn from your mistakes and move on.
Keep working on yourself , true happiness is within not in human relations imo. Your 39 still pretty young live the present

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.
