But i can see where you are coming from being that you got advice from WBA and that it would not be forever you'd have to use the straps...To each their own, but it doesn't look like kerpal is too into it.
I see you added a bit.

"I don't want to use straps and cheat myself out of forearm growth. Anyone got advice on this? Should I drop the weight to 120kg and go for 2x6 or 7 to let my forearms grow? Any advice is appreciated."

That is a quote from myself on the 6th of April last year in my Journal, page 1. As you can see I thought that straps would be a bad idea and prohibit forearm growth/development-boy was I wrong.

My point above was that people seem to have this preconception that straps are bad for your grip, on the contrary they strengthened mine very quickly and considerably in 3-4 weeks and I haven't needed them since.

I wish I still had the PM that WBA sent me on this, it lay the issue to rest for me.

I am not saying that straps would do the same in this situation, although I think they would. The option has merit and should definitely be considered.

PS-Having said that, they may be unnecessary. As Kerpal has said he intends to start at 315 and work his way up. Because he has lifted more in the past, the strength should return very quickly. That excellent thing called "muscle memory". However if it stalls on the way back up, straps would be the answer.

I deadlifted again today.

I pulled 320 x 5, 340 x 2, 370 x 1 (new PR for me, but felt like I could have done a lot more if my grip was stronger).

I think my plan is working :)

I also ordered some chalk, should be here in a few days. I think that will help a lot with the grip. I don't think straps are necessary yet but I may reconsider using them in the future if grip strength becomes a problem again.

You weren't using chalk man! Blasphemy!

Chalk can definitely sort out grip problems. I saw a guy doing 30-40lbs more when he borrowed some of mind. All it was was his grip was slipping.

Congrats on the PR, 400+ soon.

Yeah, I've also been painfully ripping open calluses on my hands  Hopefully the chalk will help with that too :)

You guys are using chalk? I've never used it when I deadlift. Something to think about. Hmmm.

I haven't read the other replies yet so forgive me if i'm repeating information

After years of deadlifting I have found that the one hand over one hand under grip is superior to the others.

Also use gloves, straps, or chalk to help you. I use gloves because I like to keep my hands soft with no calluses and I believe developing alot of grip strength is overrated and unnecessary unless you do powerlifting competitions

what is alot of grip strength ????? why is it only necessary for powerlifting comps ??? what happens when you need to get stronger in the deadlift or the pull up for strength purposes not for competition purposes ?? what happens if your arms lack proportion because you've got big shoulders, big bi's and tri's and puny forearms ??

hmmm, well even with gloves (semi cheap ones) you can still get calluses...plus imo its manly to have calluses on your hands

Gloves for me make me lose grip, and are not good for me at heavy weights (which in most cases defeats the purpose of lifting). If anything, gloves makes it harder for most lifts, i say do without them. Not sure if anyone agrees with me with this but thats my opinion ;)

Get a 500 lb deadlift (straps, mixed, whatever) and see if you have poor grip strength.

You guys stress so much about the small crap it's a wonder you make progress at all.

The thicker you make the bar the harder it is to grip.

I think the problem is solved...

Today I pulled:

5 x 365
1 x 405

Felt like I could have done 405 a couple more times too, even held it at the top for about 10 seconds, but it was my first lift of the workout and I didn't want to use up all my energy.

It was a combination of chalk + my body "relearning" how to deadlift.
