Hesitancy to approach is not always due to misplaced anxiety. Sometimes I can just sense to the core of my being whether or not someone's "right" for me to interact with.

I usually qualify a woman first by smiling at her, or some such, and if I get the cold shoulder it's just as good as a stop sign. On to the next one who reacts positively... But sometimes I'll just go up to a couple gals and chat, especially if there's a good "opener," such as one of them wearing a cool hat or some such.

I forget who it was, but someone said "look for openers, not targets." There's a lot of sense in that.
