I have a gigantic problem that has plagued me for years: painful muscle spasms and soreness from exercise or physical activities.

It is mostly the muscles in my neck, shoulders and between the shoulders on the spine. I have a very slight curve in my vertebrae in that area.

These muscles are in searing pain right now. Late last night I went through three 40 oz. bottles and two 24 oz of beer and several shots of liquor to relax these muscles. I don't want to ever have to do that again!

I was doing mostly okay for years until I joined a gym several days ago. Been going every day just using the walking machines for cardio. No weight lifting yet. The walking has caused my muscles in the neck and back to tighten up and spasm. No matter how much I've tried to let my arms go limp and relax they go back.

Even when I used to go for long walks outside these muscles tightened up.

One cure I've found is strong coffee but the caffeine keeps me up all night and I get very irritable. Others are my Homedics message chair, stretches and working out at home with weights but these are only temporary.

I have Ben Gay on right now and it is of no help. When I had insurance a Chiropractor was the mericle cure but used to go several times a week and I'd have to pay out of the pocket now. They are $$$$$ per session.

What do you guys do to ease the pain of muscle spasms and tightness? Is there a specific food I should eat more of or stay away from?

If there is a food cure, here is my current diet. I eat 6 small meals a day of chicken breasts, whey protein shakes, Doritos (one small bag per day), apples and various other fruits and vegetables, and drink a gallon of water a day. My BMR is 2018 calories and my intake is about two hundred less than that.

I can recall more info on my condition if prodded with questions. Feeling really numbed up from the pain now.

I never want to drink large quantities of alcohol again to solve this problem because it is only a temporary fix.

Please help.

I highly doubt that the people on this board will be able to help you.
Most of us are not trained doctors or anything with no medical degree or education.

I'd say go to your doctor, and ask him/her about it. I'd also suggest you research about this problem of yours...perhaps you will find a cure.
Besides...its always good to know whats going on so that you have some background info before going to a doctor.

my 2 cents

I'd suggest a massage therapist on occasion. I dont mean every week or so, but when you can afford one. You need a certified one, and when you go, tell them problematic areas.

If stuff like this doesn't help much you need to see a doctor especially muscle spasms and what not in the neck/shoulder area.

I had little twitches in my upper neck around the Atlas (C-1) and Axis (C-2) and then part of the rest of the Cervical Vertebrae.

My back was a tad sore as well. I KNEW the cause of it, and I stopped it. I do some stocking, and when I stock stuff from a warehouse we put it up on shelves, and I would bend over to grab the stuff. This only happens 2x per week, but I would do it for like 4hrs. Take this times 4yrs and it caught up to me.

I told my boss I wasn't doing that any more, and I would only stock product on the ground.

I have been pain free after I quit all of that. The position of my back and pulling product up while hunched over was tearing me up.

Also too for things what you mention, Ben Gay or any of that suff is only a mask and I dont suggest it all of the time.

If you are still doing things that may contribute to the pain, try to avoid that. I knew it wasn't my lifting in the gym, and my lifting at work. Both me and my partner at work feel so much better and will not be going back to doing that stuff again.

I know 28 may not sound old, but I dont want to feel like that later in life, and ruin my body on the job.

Just my 2 cents, and if the muscle spasms HURT, you need to see a Dr and have them X-ray your back and that area to see what is up if it is that bad.

You might try Alexander technique; it helped me with pain from a partially torn tendon.
If nothing else its cheaper than a chiro, but it is surprising (as i found out and other students of AT told me) how many problems can be alleviated. Alexander himself claimed to have partial paralysis of the vocal cords before he developed the technique.

Thanks everyone. I think I've found the cure for my soreness.

I think most of it is due to a lack of warm ups and cool downs before working out.

Not really in that much pain for the past couple days. I am adding coffee to my morning diet every other day. Somehow it helps to loosen up some of the knots.

I take all of your suggestions seriously and look into all of the options.

Thanks!
