Remember, if you're fighting over a woman ...

... you're a 100 percent AFC. If you're a DJ there should be no question in the woman's mind that she should be with you, not the punk you're gonna be fighting.

And then again, she's probably not worth fighting for because if you're a DJ, there's another woman right around the corner for you!

If I ever get married and someone breaks into my house and tries to rape and murder my wife - You'd better believe that I'll fight for her.:p

But I get what you're saying.;)

Well, of course

You defend your wife's or gf's honor and keep them away from harm, no question there.

But if you have to fight to win over a girl's (emphasis on girl, not woman) affections, you're not DJing well enough!

If it is a bullying problem, lift weights, get into something like boxing ASAP. It'll teach you how to cover up properly, throw good punches, give you a good cardio/explosive strength workout, and you'll probably get yourself knocked about for a bit. You'll get used to it and you wont **** your pants when someone is about to throw a punch.

I've taken down many an aikido-ist in my time in free-sparring. Infact, almost everyone that said their art is the best for self defence. It's amazingly good if you spend yours to master it. For the years up to that, you'll get lost of twists/broken fingers trying to grab properly etc. Plus you wont do any agressive moves, which although positive, isnt always the most applicable response.

Kickboxing, Boxing, Ninjitsu, Brazillian Jui-jitsu, Kenpo and Jeek Kune Do are all of my reccomendations. I'd probably go for BJJ cause I'm obsessing about it for some reason, at the moment. :p

Course you need to know how to fight. It could save your life.

A real man avoids the fight
A man pulls through in the fight
A boy loses the fight.

Being that real man also means you have to atleast know how to fight imo.

Jeet Kune Do all the way. Just watch out for fraudulent instructors... If they don't give Bruce Lee any credit - Beware!

One aspect of combat that's rarely gone over or even mentioned is the emotional impact getting decked or grabbed has on most people. If it's not something you're used to it can really choke you up when you're confronted by violence. That's not at all out of the ordinary.

I think your best bet would be to join a martial art that uses sparring as part of it's training regimin (which most do). It gets you used to combat as an every-day occurence, so if you ever DO have to defend yourself or some chick, you're at least a little more emotionally prepared for a fight.

Don't join a school to "learn to kick peoples asses" though. If that's your objective you won't last long, because you're not going to see instant results. Over the course of a few years, you'll start to react much better/faster to attacks, and definitely learn to inflict damage on an assailant, but you're not gonna be Bruce Lee after a couple weeks at the Dojo.

I'd say check out a Shotokan dojo...most will let you watch a couple classes and try it out once or twice for free, then you can join up if it's for you. Shotokan's great because the techniques are simple, powerful, and effective. A LOT of stress is also put on Character Development as well, which is great. I personally think it's a much purer form than Tae-Kwon Do, which is kind of haphazard and showy. Anyway, best of luck.

No offence, but karate is a worthless art. If you're gonna' learn to fight, learn to fight. Don't dance around and waste your energy on a bunch of pointless forms. Some people argue that karate is good for fitness, but I've worked with too many fat instructors in the past.

Simple western boxing is better than Shotokan karate.

Though, in alot of reality based schools they tell you that kicks to the head, or anywhere above the waist are unrealistic. I find that a front snap kick straight to the chin is the quickest way to put someone down in most cases.

Check out the "Tao of Jeet Kune Do" by Bruce Lee. "Bruce Lee's Fighting Method" vol 1-4, and "Chinese Gung Fu" also by Bruce Lee.

For some great info on how to improve you kicks, check out the books and videos by Thomas Kurz and Mac Mierzejewski at stadion publishing company.:D

Finding a school that offers full contact sparring is one of the best things that you can do for yourself. Just beware of unrealistic training methods.

I disagree wholeheartedly, spike (bebob fan?) :), with your assertion that karate isn't an effective combat technique. Especially if you supplement it with some kind of groundwork training and a lot of free-sparring. It dramatically increases your reaction speed and the power of your attacks, because you learn to block and strike with the full power of your WHOLE body, not just the limb you're striking with.

You also develop a degree of confidence and better posture, which ultimately makes you LESS LIKELY to get in a fight...you don't look like an easy target for a predator. If you're commited to a realistic form (like Shotokan) you will, over time, become a good fighter. A highly trained Shotokan instructor can deliver a punch at a speed of 43 feet per second, delivering 1500 pounds of destructive power to a 1 by 2 inch area (from M.Nakayama's "Dynamic Karate")...you telling me that wouldn't do a little damage?

Good call on the front snap to the chin, though...it is a brutal attack, as long as you get you leg back fast enough to avoid it getting grabbed.

Too many karate instructors teach methods that would never work in a real fight. Jeet Kune Do, Gung Fu, and kick boxing have a natural feel to them. Karate doesn't.

Also, I don't think that it is possible to fight with only your limbs. In fact, I am pretty sure that goes against the laws of physics. Even a boxer uses kinetic energy.

Go down to the Crystal Bar in Alpine, Texas and see what happens when a karateka gets into a fight with a bunch of rednecks... It isn't pretty for the karate man, let me tell you!;)

Heck, just check out an MMA/UFC fight.

If you wanna' dance like a fairy to a bunch of katas (like I used to) then fine, do it. But just know it has nothing to do with the reality of combat.

Anyways, what does bebop have to do with martial arts?-jazzercising isn't a martial art, FYI.:p

If I kick someone in the head, they are not going to be doing much of anything... Least of all reaching out to grab my foot.

Check out this video: http://www.stadion.com/power.html

Mac is a Karate man who can actually fight, even though he moves more like a Jeet Kune Do man.

You`ve got to learn how to let loose your anger and use it as it rises. The people hitting you prolly did their best shot anyway. Just let your anger get out all at once and aim for their necks!

Just do a swinging motion with your fist and hit the side of their neck as hard as you can. They will fall.
I've had an encounter w/someone who punched me in my face back when i was 16. After that one punc h ijust teared up...same as the dude, the punch wasnt painful, but rather an emotional thing.

back when i was a kid, i believed in those 2 points strongly, thats why i wasnt much of a violent person. I honestly wouldnt know what would happen if a fight were to start. But my mind tells me that i'll do my best to kick their ass. i've grown since a kid, mentally, emotionally, and physically, but im pretty confident in all my abilities.

the first 3 rules of Fight Club:

YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB.

for those of you that watched it, thumbs up.

Remember in the scene where Brad gives hw to the club members, about starting fights. he tells those dudes about how most ppl dont like fights, and do as much as you can to get their rage out.
