It's amusing that you guys believe going barefoot in a gym is safer.
as long as everyone keeps their eyes open & heads about them, and takes the time to do simple things like using clips, i see no reason why this wouldn't be true, especially if you wore slip ons all the way to the rack & then put em back on before leaving. of course, most lifters at the gym insist on trying to move more weight than they can safely handle, without spotters and without properly warming up.

Would you say that walking around a construction site barefoot is safer too?
not with rusty nails lying around, no.

Both are identical when you consider that there are plenty of sweating, uncoordinated peons moving around objects upwards of 20lbs, all day long at the gym.
hmmm... the average american bedroom, when it sees any action, involves sweating, uncoordinated peons moving themselves (upwards of 200 lbs.) around, for at least five minutes at a time. somebody could lose an eye in there, let alone a foot.

And one more thing...despite what you say, natural is not always better. Consider that the "natural" longevity of life back in caveman days was significantly shorter compared to our "unnatural" way of life now.
true enough. but we're also pretty ****y about some of the quote-unquote improvements we've made, often without justification.

Fair enough...And yeah, a lot of the improvements we have today have been labelled as an "improvement" not because it's better in any way, but because it makes some guy rich.

I can understand taking off your shoes to do exercises, where the only danger is one you make yourself... But to let the fate of my toes to fall into(or out of) the hands of some guy with sweaty palms walking around with plates in a gym isn't exactly worth walking barefoot for.

On another note, most of my cardio is done barefoot now, since it's summer I just run or walk around a soccer pitch for awhile.
