criticism is a form of abuse.
you can help a person by identifying his problem(s) and offering suggestions on how to correct them. that's not criticizing, and that's not putting someone down.
On the other hand, telling someone he is a lazy good-for-nothing loser, whimp or crybaby or something to that effect is not what I would consider helpful, even if their is some validity to his claim. In spite of what the teller might want you to believe, putting you down it is not for your benefit but rather to feed his own petty ego.
