Indeed, maybe that is a Brit thing. The only time I'd ever want a debt is if I'm just starting a business, and it's the very first loan I needed for it or something like that. That's the only type of debt I'd wilfully get into, and only if I'd established a very rigorous plan for how I'm going to pay it off.Edit: read more of the thread. Smooth is coming at the debt thing sameway I am - British perspective, live within your means, debt is death.
We are pretty harsh on debt over here, it's a poor people thing. Cultural thing, I would personally rather die than leave anyone I love in debt. Debt kills families. Different upbringing, hence why I think Richard's decision has been met with mixed emotions, I would never do it. Pay for what you can afford and live accordingly.
I think it's also a clash of flat out LMS/materialism versus a more personal approach to SMV. I've always thought the best way to be successful with women, even just socialising, is to improve your most personal assets first. I'm talking about things like physique, haircut, personality and developing charm.
If I'm not charming enough, all that happens is I lose the interest of a girl/friend/colleague. If I'm attracting people because I'm muscular and funny, I can't lose that unless something really horrific and out of my control happens (like a freak accident or something). On the other hand, if everything that makes me magnetic relies on money and I default on my loan...well, I lose all of my magnetism AND a f*ck ton more.
So I don't disagree with Richard's Lamborghini or why he bought it, I think I just have different priorities in terms of what I'd improve first and foremost. For me, the Lambo would be something I'd get as the cherry on the top once I'm already happy with my looks, my physique, my sense of style and my bank balance. But maybe he's already happy there.
