Sometimes you just hit a slump in life. What do y'all do to get back into your proper mental state?

Edit: Not sure if I put this in the right forum area or not.

I do something, anything, so long as it gets my gloomy ass off the couch or out of bed and exposes me to sunlight.

The mantra I tell myself is "discipline beats motivation" especially when I am depressed. If I waited until I was motivated it would never happen. I also try to set a routine even if it seems dumb to other people and put it on my wall. "get up. Shower. Eat breakfast. Brush teeth. Do 10 push ups. Put on clean clothes. Walk to post box.."

Sunshine and excercise are your best remedy when depressed. If you are at the suicidal stage go see your doctor. He might refer you on to someone and/or give you some meds.

Yup... You are not alone. Does it feel like all your emotional nerve endings have been burnt out and everything just feels "meh" even stuff you should be excited about? Your IDGAF pile is the size of mount everest. The highlight of your day is going to bed. People just seem completely tedious and boring "blah blah blah"

YMMV

Exercise helps a lot. I may go to the gym in the morning but end up getting stressed out later. That's when I go for a walk and put some headphones in and just zone out. Lately it's been too cold, so I just go on the treadmill, it's the same thing. If you don't have one, do some jumping jacks or some ****. MOTION can affect your eMOTION. Smile, even if you don't feel like it. Fix your posture. Trick your body into being happy and your brain will follow.

Pretty much. I was at a bar friday night, I saw this one chick who was smoking and just thought "Eh, big ****ing whoop."

I practically live at the gym. Just not feeling it. In fact I am probably going to skip my workout tonight.

It won't last forever.

Maybe its time for a new direction. Maybe its time for a new goal. Maybe you need to go down a different path.

It usually happens to me when my life slows down. I thrive on action, goals and challenges. When things become stagnant and I'm not working towards a goal, I'll sometimes have one of those "now what?" moments and find myself depressed for no reason I can point too. And nothing really seems interesting, motivating or exciting.

There are generally two ways to deal with it:
1. Shock your system by doing something spontaneous, scary, risky or exciting
2. Wait it out (it will pass eventually)

Life without passion is empty. I think we all need a good amount of passion, growth and transformation in our lives to make us feel alive. You probably just need a challenge or a goal.

Poon King,

What is your opinion on the state of jobs, 9-5, middle class, corporate America/ whatever you want to call it. Honing in on your "life without passion is empty" line which I agree with, what do you propose for the 70% of Americans who hate their monotonous, boring data entry/spreadsheets/office/sales/city jobs which not only block passion but are the very source of their depression?

We discussed in another thread not committing to one woman. Well, one of my good choices was not marrying or having kids young, I have a lot of freedom in life. But that has been a downfall at times. I have commitment issues beyond women and a lot of it has to do with my job. Just left my 9th one in 4 years because it's soooo fvcking menial and soul killing.

Surely you can respect the idea that if a man hates his job he should leave, but you also understand that the usual advice is one of two extremes "get a better job" which doesn't adjust for the devolution of the labor market since the middle class disappeared, and "quit your job, follow your dream, and the money will follow" which is just stupid, hollow advice.

I get the whole 'even a cr-ppy job is better than no job'. Do you have any other things in your life that interest you or are there other things that might interest you?

I disagree with that statement with every fiber of my being (I know you're not unequivocally stating it, just saying) and even wrote a little e-book about why I think work as we know in this country is lethal to the contemporary American male. But that's a subject for another thread I guess, question is how do I get out.

My passion in life is travel. For instance this application is all me. Help people with their travel, work remotely, make your own schedule, get paid mostly commission and get paid what you put into it.

https://bootsnall.recruiterbox.com/jobs/fk0hf1t/

I even wrote the guy a follow up email. He thanked me and said I looked like a good match but that he had 350 applicants.

Further on the travel thing, I have a fascination with youth hostels as alternative travel lodging. Cheaper, and they open up a world of possibilities for single people to travel solo, which undoubtedly stops so many people.

Thought about trying to open one, but I'm not a small business kind of guy. My commitment issues would prevent me from taking on that kind of responsibility, which would be even longer hours than as an employee. I'm mostly an independent contractor/freelance guy.

Would definitely work at a youth hostel, start as front desk and try to be running the thing myself within a year or 2, but there isn't one with 250 miles of me.
