Read Dog Training books. You'll see some strong correlations between the Human Pecking Order and the Animal Pecking Order.
For example, in a litter of puppies, it's said that the Alpha Dog:
- Is trusted by the group to protect them, make the decisions, and provide/feed them.
- Usually gets the most comfortable resting places, gets to eat first, and is much more territorially oriented than most of the others.
- Is playful and upbeat, yet strong and assertive. They display dominant qualities, usually meaning that they get THEIR way, and are willing to put any other dog who challenges that notion, in their place.
- Sometimes could be aggressive
- Is respected by all other peers.
It's not about insulting people, but it's about the willingness and capability to insult people if the NEED arises. Really, it's about self-respect and an intolerance for less than the best in one's life, and not allowing any person or any thing deter self from that.
Anybody else can build on this if needed...
