What colognes / aftershaves would you guys recommend using? Is it a good idea to have a range of them?

I am not exaggerating when I say I have over 300 bottles of colonge. it's a hobby I inherited from my father. we both are cologne nuts. half of them I may have worn once or twice. even still if I smell something I like I have ot have it.

actually 407 at last count. keep in mind though I have been collecting colonge my entire life for the most part not like i just went out and bought most last year or something. my dad has more than that.

You have to develop your taste for what you like. Some men like strong classic like the original polo, some like more sweet fregerences like Jean Paul Gaultier "Le Male" or the classic CK one.


see, this why we need more sub forums, this is a very good topic.

Here are 10 fegerences that I would recommend for every man that is starting his colonge collection or just trying to get some basic fergerences. this will cover the entire gammit of them and you can figure out what you want and don't like. plus i can confirm women pretty much go ape**** for all 10.

Jaguar Performance (it's green, they make a regular jaguar as well, the performance is the one you want)
Bond no. 9 West Broadway (pricy but the **** is liquid gold. this is my go to freg right here)

i actually use the original gucci as a bed frerence. we spray it on the bed. it has a minty /chocolaty smell to it that I love. I did it and now my wife does it.

angel for men almost smells like dark chololate. women LOVE that **** as it is so different it catches people off guard. I get a lot of "what is that smell" when I wear that.

women love bond . 9. that's usually what i wore when it was time to try to close the deal. lol or at least when I thought it was time to close the deal

My personal fav is creed Himalaya. it's very fresh / cool. it's my wife's fav too.

From there it will give you a good idea of what you do and do not like, but at the same time, you have something for every occasion. you don't want to wear something fruity to a wedding or a funeral so you have the original polo, etc


I also happen to be a pretty avid shaver. Do not use "colonge" aftershaves. for the most part they are garbage. The best aftershave for the money IMHO is clubman aftershave is the best you can buy. I actually have to dullate it when I use it it' so potent. I don't give give a damn how my aftershave smells. Aftershave is supposed to heal your skin not smell nice. Do not treat aftershave like colonge. they are not one in the same

Thankyou Backbreaker, much appreciated. I started wearing Armani a couple of months ago and I've found that I get complimented by women and find they get more drawn in by the scent. A lot of guys I know would dismiss that right away, but women pick up on the little details, personal grooming goes a long way.

I agree another sub forum on personal grooming would be a great addition.

Cologne is like wine, in a sense. It can make some women a little bubbly, slightly intoxicated, or flat-out drunk. I wouldn't recommend anything so strong that it would make women DRUNK by the smell of it. lol

Here are two of my favorites:

Perry Ellis 360 (degrees)

A very definitive scent. It's a little classier, and a little more intoxicating to the women I've dated. These women tended to associate it with being in a very sexual state of mind. I would consider this one to be in the slightly, "sexy" category. Great for date nights.

Curve

A good, clean scent that's not overpowering------but noticeable. to most women. Good for ANYTIME or event------day or night. Most women I know like it because it's so fresh and light. I would put this one in the light and bubbly category. It's usually just strong enough to get the average woman's attention.

Also, regardless of what you use, remember to spray it on very lightly in strategic areas (neck and inner wrist to be sure). I've heard of some women who spray their colognes "in the air", then walk through the mist and let it settle onto them.

I don't personally know of ANY guys who do that. But I thought I'd share...

The take home message is that TOO MUCH of any cologne can become offensive to everyone around you.

Just keep in mind that if people around you start cracking jokes about how much you smell like a "French Prostitute", then it's time for you to cut back on the scents, soldier.

see i was hoping not to have to spend more than 1post her beuicsase of the post limit. now we are getting into "fragrance game" so to speak.

to answer your question, the jag performance covers the citrus. but it goes deeper than that why I did not chose that. p personally, i just like the jag a little bit more. it's not as strong. i don't like over powering smells. but i agree its very very good colonge. but

here is the thing.

once you really start diving into colognes more than just 1-2 bottles that you use for everything, you have your cologne that is, standard use cologe. for instance if i am going to a wedding or a funeral I'm wearing polo original. that's classic, male fragrance cologne. You run into people / women and they smell you with that on, that says that you are socially aware enough to know what is considered to be the standard so to speak, and how to smell at certain events if that makes any sense. you don't; show up at a wedding wearing some citrus fruit cologne (unless it's on the beach).

but more so, so you got your Big three. polo original, Cool Water and Drakkar Noir are IMHO the big three, generic colonges.

but once you get past that... my thing about colonge is, I don 't necessarily want yout o know what it is. that kinda defeats the purpose. note the colonges on my list aren't the most popular. hell i could have told you that. there are a few standard colonges you need to have, but once you get past those 3, maybe 4, after that, what you want to go for is, good smelling but unique. good smelling but unique.

the WORSE thing that can ever happen to you when it comes to a cologne is you go somewhere and a chick smells you and says "oh my boyfriend has that" without even asking you what it is lol. she just knows that smell. she smells it on his generic ass everyday and now you are generic just like his generic ass. And yes some colonges are so noticable this is quite easily to do. I can smell the fanist levels of cool water or polo.. boy CK one has such a unique smell.

while I have it, Hermes Terra is what I consider to be generic. I don't like colognes I know everyone has or that if i go to a jazz bar there are geoing to be 2-3 other guys with the same **** i have on. the guy that walks in the mall and the woman behind the counter upsells that hot new bottle of X to everyone that walks by and he thinks he's hot **** now that he has it on. nor do I really want a woman to know what i am wearing if i can help it.'

the response i want from a woman, hell even my wife is "damn, what is that. that smells great"

the key being, what is that. i want to give a woman if i ma out alone, a reason to want to talk to me. me smelling nice is not a bad thing, not at all but it's not a reason for her to talk to me or ask me a question. i've had more than one woman on the other hand start a conversation me just asking me what fregrence i was wearing. I'm not saying I closed the deal on all of them, but the more chances you get the better you have at getting something.

My fav is Creed Himalaya. While it's.. it's pretty popular online, it's not so popular as to wear most women have smelled it before. most haven't. "damn, what isw that you have on, that smells so good". I'm not saying that happens evey time i walk out the door but it happens.


I'm not saying I don't wear them at all. In fact I had on the Terra about 2 weeks ago actually. I love CK one. one of my personal top 5 to this day. they hit the spot with that i wear it a few times a month. but, I'm married lol. for the most part now I just try to smell nice when I am walking around the house or curled up with my baby. Im' not wearing cologne on dates anymore or trying to gain interest or set myself apart from other men.

so in short, the list is not so much a top 10 list as much as it is 3 or so that you really need to have, then 7 that smell nice of different tastes

Guerlain Vetiver vs Tom Ford Grey Vetiver

guerlain..classic though intense.
tom ford...subtle, refined.

I give the edge to ford because of its daily wearability. (though the guerlain is the king of kings in many ways)

i like the tom ford alot.

keep in mind, the avg guy doesn't h ave more than 2-3 bottles of cologne. your avg guy has something "classic", something his grandmother got him and something someone at the store sold him.

so your avg guy mightave a bottle of cool water, some michael jordon cologe (Which actually doesen't suck,but it's too popular) and some Jean Paul Gaultier "Le Male"... Hermes Terra falls into the "was sold when he walked in the store" category.

very few men are going to be walking around with tom ford. 1. even though most department stores carries it, it's not very cheap and not something that is easily sold and 2. it's just not as popular.

I've been trying LOTS of different fragrances ever since I was in high school. As a kid, I would go to the store with friends weekly and just try out everything they had, being on sort of a quest to find the absolute best fragrance ever made


But the best fragrance has only been invented a couple of years ago. It is:

Diamonds by Armani

1. First of all, I love the smell myself. I think that's very important, aside from what women think about it, you need to love the fragrance YOURSELF!

2. This fragrance has gotten me HUGE, HUGE amounts of positive feedback from women, probably more than any other fragrance I ever tried.

3. Fvck all those COMMON fragrances like Jean Paul Gaultier 'Le Male', Davidoff 'Cool Water' or whatever the common slaves walking around spray on themselves.
Seriously, when you walk through a club on Saturday night, you find that all guys smell the same. It's basically the same 2 or 3 fragrances all around you, just with a small variation here and there.
Same goes for clothing and hairstyle, each dude I see walking on the street is simply a copy of the rest, with a little variation here and there. You should want to distinguish yourself from the masses, instead of being a simple PEASANT. Nuff said, this fragrance is a bit more distinguished. Girls will associate the smell with ONLY YOU, not with TEN OTHER GUYS.

4. Some fragrances smell great but wear off quickly. Not this one, it lasts all night long!

Obviously, tastes differ. But this is honestly the best fragrance I've ever used.

I'll take a swing at this one.

Have you ever noticed how a Middle Eastern taxi driver never showers? He just wipes his underarms at the gas station on the same piece of newspaper that he uses to wipe the windows. Then he reaches into his bag in the trunk, and throws baby powder all over himself, into his stinking shoes, takes a couple gulps of vodka, and heads back to the airport.

Baby powder scent is very common in old-timey women's perfumes. So why would a man want to smell like an old women? (Don't run ahead of the story, please.)

There's another smell to be avoided: old man smell. Dirty old men in dirty old flophouses get cheap drug store brand deodorants and shaving cream in their handout toiletries kits. One of the more-common cheap deodorants is Old Spice. It smells like lime. So do several of the drug store shaving creams.

To avoid being associated with dirty old men, avoid any fragrance that smells too strongly citrus.

Besides, grapefruit was a big fad a few years ago. Discount stores are rife with all sorts of citrussy-smelling potions and lotions. Women know this. The citrus colognes that are marketed today are probably the most metrosexual smells out there. Not because there's anything really wrong with a sharp, clear scent. But because all the women associate it with discount-store women's hand lotion.

My personal observation is that my male pheremones smell like apple. Thus, the Biblical story of Eve biting the apple. Maybe because humans are one of the few animals that sweat, and we sweat out the same stuff we urinate. We're basically fruit eaters, we excrete a lot of excess sugar and fruit oils, so there.

Apple is good. Fruit fragrances in general are good. Women eat like pigs, humans are natural fruit eaters, so women are irresistibly attracted to fruit smells. However, so many kiddie, Victoria's Secret or Justin Bieber -type fragrances are fruity candy. It's like, how many gummy bears did you just eat, young lady? You can't go with mere fruit. It's not sophisticated enough.

That's why I settled on Aramis. It's one of those old school perfumes. It smells like incense but leaves a lingering floral/fruit odor afterward. Actually, it's an eau de toilette (halfway between a perfume and a cologne). I never put it on my skin. After a shower, there's already too much smell there from soap and shampoo. I put Aramis in the armpits of my jackets after I'm through for the day, and let the smell dissipate through the material.

Sure, Aramis has been around a long time. There are plenty of dirty old women who'll remember it if they smell it on you. And they'll all probably run home and throw on some baby-powder-smelling Elizabeth Arden or something. No worry. Floral fragrances are pretty much history. I can't remember smelling any woman's or man's perfume that smelled like flowers. They all try to smell like vanilla, or pears, or baby powder. If you use it lightly enough -- as you should -- nobody's going to click on what it is. All they'll know is that there's some kind of cologne there.

I also like Hawleywoods no.9 which makes me smell like a barbershop.

Down Low you know putting cologne on fabric alters the scent. Neck, wrists, and chest, on bare skin then your body will carry the scent.

if you liek the barbershop go get some clubman aftershave. that's basically what it is. the stuff they put on you at the barbershop

note: the **** burns worse than a STD lol. think home alone. it takes some getting used to.

Cologne is perfume simply labeled that it's for a man. Personally, I don't wear perfume, aka cologne.

I just make sure I shower every day.

Any guy who doesn't think cologne is a major tool to pick up women is crazy. The sense of smell is one of the most powerful of all human senses when it comes to romance. Just think about when you smell something that reminds you of a special person or place. It immediately engulfs you with a great feeling.

I too am a bit of a cologne afficianado. And I'm surprised nobody brought up the best smelling cologne on the market. Aqu Di Gio by Giorgio Armani is a can't miss scent. It's a bit outdated now, but I'm telling you, I've never met a woman that doesn't like the smell. Chrome by Azzarro is another great smelling fragrence. Very clean.

I read somewhere that the number of different essential oils that are available to perfume and cologne makers is actually quite small, 250 or so. I think that's why the older fragrances have not been really been replaced. It's hard to come up with new ones.

pretty much.l you have your base smells and most knew stuff is just a variation on that.

Aqua di Gio is actually the worst fragrance EVER, by far! It smells UNPLEASANT, even outright DIRTY and it is the only fragrance that ever evoked feelings of HATE inside of me. I remember how basically EVERYONE was wearing it like 10 years ago, particularly the type of guys who thought they were cool but really were fake @ss motherfukking losers whose faces I wanted to punch in. I truly and utterly DESPISE Aqua di Gio and the people who wore it at it's height of popularity. I've never really experienced such negativity towards a fragrance, it stands unique... If anyone ever gave me a bottle of this GARBAGE, I'd feel INSULTED and smash it into the ground right in front of them!

You say that you had this intense hatred for this cologne. Very weird if you want my opinion to hate something so viceraly. But you never said women hated it. I got news for you buddy....nobody cares if you like it or not. Men don't wear cologne to impress other men. At least not straight guys. This cologne gets great reactions from women. Afterall, that's why we wear the **** in the first place.
