I have spent the last six years at a majority female, mostly liberal arts, east coast party school.

I would see young women eating lunch or studying alone all the time. Not all of them are connected to the social scene.

Do not do spam approaches. Take your time and develop a strategy. You can find campus calendars online. Do not go during midterms or finals. Do not hang around after dark.
I would agree with all of this.

Find out when social gatherings like games, homecoming, etc are scheduled.
I would disagree about doing approaches before or after football or basketball games at a bigger Division I type school. It's going to be too crowded, the women will be in larger groups (often mixed set), and they'll be too distracted.

At bigger state universities and private universities large enough to be D-1, you might be able to be successful with this with a smaller, less attended sport. You might even bother to go to the game and do approaches during breaks in the action.

Weekends aren’t as crowded and the students generally appear less stressed because they don’t have classes, though they still go to the library to study

I seriously think playing the grad school angle is a good way to approach and open. You can ask them what they like or dislike about the school and acquire other relevant info.
You could be near the library or a student union on a weekend afternoon and possibly be successful with it if....
  • you're good looking
  • you're 30 or under
  • you can talk to women and have some charisma
The thing about outdoor approaching in any venue is that you need a decent amount of foot traffic to get enough approaches in to get a yes. If you were to do this on a university campus on a weekend, you would need to devote at least 2 hours to lingering. If you're not spam approaching, in those 2 hours, you might see 5 women with receptive enough body language and circumstances for getting approached. Most women will be wearing earbuds or be in large groups with their friends. Ideally, you want an isolated woman but if you're running game solo, you can probably get away with approaching a two set. Most two sets will be so deep into conversation that you won't be able to get in an approach. Of those 5, 3 would probably end the conversation in 30 seconds or less.

In a metropolitan area with a population of 500,000 or more, some park, walking path, or the beach would offer you just as many, if not more, approach opportunities. You also don't have to make up a fake excuse for being there and you can do it as legitimately in your 30s/40s as your 20s.

I would say it is possible to score, but your game has to be tight and frame solid. You probably won’t get Buffy and her Omega Mu sisters, but a lonely nerd girl isn’t beyond reach, if that’s what you want.
I mentioned good conversation and charisma above. BTW, in "Revenge of the Nerds", Omega Mu was the low tier sorority. Pi Delta Pi was the top tier sorority.

If you do university approaching, it depends more on your own looks and charisma but in most cases you won't be getting a 7.5+ doing it. 5.5 - 7.4 is possible and likely a non-sorority woman. If you got a 20 year old non-sorority 6 as a 27-28 non-affiliated guy doing it, that'd be impressive.

At a city park or walking path, you might be able to get a 23-26 year old newer graduate as a 27-28 year old guy who could be a 7.5-8.5 with solid game in a bigger city.

word spreads around fast. Even in a large university, there are going to be certain places on campus that are going to be approach worthy. You will see the same people over and over and over again. Most extreme example is back at my alma mater when we had this old creep who became the talk of campus:
Most non-affiliated men wouldn't do something so creepy. Most non-affiliated men wouldn probably do a couple of approaches (if that), have them go nowhere, and leave. If they aren't doing that regularly, word won't travel at all.

When I was student, I doubt I had any reputation on campus for anything. Only a small fraction of the whole undergrad population knew me.

Thanks for the clarification.
