Oh knock it off with the "AFC" sh*t. It's called Cinderella Man because the sportswriter (Damon Runyon) called him that because his rise from poor guy with nothing to heavyweight champion of the world with betting odds 10 to 1 against him. It was like a fairy tale, thus -- "Cinderella Man".

knocking on a movie just because of it's "AFC title." you don't see it to be better than Rocky? have you even seen Cinderella Man? im sorry, but i find that to be rather very shallow of you.

You are putting words into my mouth. I was just having fun and making light of the title. As for the movie the reason I asked because it is the same genre about a boxer past his prime that is given an oppertuinty so succedd and does so. Rocky was a good movie and alot of people are comparing it to this.

oh and don't be sorry, I am probably a very shallow person because I am here trying to improve my life so hot women would take notice (hey guess what? that is why you are here too! which makes you a shallow closed minded guy as well! I think you best open your mind and try to pick up women who are ugly and fat because they are people too!! See generalization is no fun.)

I saw the trailer for that movie and the whole theatre cracked up when the title was shown in the end. I haven't seen the movie but I think naming such a testosterone filled movie cinderella man is hilarious. (No diss on the movie itself cause I haven't seen it yet.)

As said above, its because it was his "alias". Much like "Iron" Mike Tyson. Or "the golden boy" Oscar De La Hoya.

A boxer with an alias like cinderella man is hilarious. Iron Mike Tyson has a tough sounding name that you would associate with a boxer...cinderella man on the other hand doesn't and that's why it's funny.

In the past that name would be acceptable but not today. Today if a boxer uses that nickname you expect him to show up to the ring with a dress.

I liked Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield nickname the best.

It ain't like he picked that name for himself. He got it from a sports writer.

You have to remember what time this took place, and people like you weren't critiqueing a classy name given to someone based on their life story.

Movie Review- Cinderella Man

Okay, I saw this film two days ago and I will tell you what is up with it in this thread instead of usually doing a separate one.

Cinderella Man

Starring Russel Crowe, Rene Zellwegger, and Paul Giamotti
Directed By Ron Howard.

Basically a depression era boxing melodrama about the "Bulldog of Hoboken" James Braddock's rise from washed out fight bum on public assistance to Heavyweight Champ. The story is somewhat Rocky like in that James Braddock is played to be a man of the people, living in the same crappy neighborhood in Jersey that he grew up in. After breaking his hand in the ring, his boxing license is taken away from him. Unable to feed his family, he goes on public assistance and at one point even begs from his past friends and business associates. Eventually he gets back on his feet again and starts working the docks, loading and unloading the various ships that come in. The story would end here but something happens. Paul Giamotti calls him up to do one last fight. They need someone at the last minute to fill a spot on the bill. He agrees and goes against the #2 contender, and some how beats him. Anyway to make a long story short, he goes on to beat the Heavyweight Champ, Max Baer Sr, in a very brutal match, and win the hearts of average Americans everywhere with his rise to the top.

It is a decent movie. It is well shot and the acting by the three principles is very good. The directing is satisfactory if not a bit maudlin at times, but since this is Ron Howard and it is a boxing Movie it is to be expected. The problem is that the script is a bit lightweight and things are just a bit too easy. The real stregth of the film comes from Russel Crowe who gives a great performance of Nobility. Despite all the crap, he will survive through it with dignity.

The real problem is inherent in the title, Cinderella Man ( about as terrible a name for a film as possible). Basically, it is a feminized view of what masculinity is. James Braddock is portrayed as being so sensitive and noble, 100% dedicated to his family friends, and church, when probably in reality he was a hard drinking bastard who did'nt take crap from anyone. They certainly did'nt show that in the movie.

To get back to the oppinion, though, it was okay overall. It is a high quality production with good acting. Women will probably like it more than men. It is essentially a man's film made for women.

You are missing the point. It is based on what he did.

What about "the golden boy", or Pernell "sweet pea" Whitaker. Do they sound tough? Man, I am sure I could go through and find some crazy alias' if I jogged my memory enough. Cindarella man is really not that bad at all.
