LONDON (CNNMoney) —The billionaire chairman of one of the world's biggest luxury groups is losing a lot of sleep over rising inequality and the destruction of the middle class.

Johann Rupert, chairman of Cartier owner Richemont, made a number of dystopian warnings during a speech at a Financial Times conference in Monaco.

He forecast that robots would "put hundreds of millions of people out of work," which would widen the gap between rich and poor and stoke social unrest.

"It's really what keeps me awake at night ... How is society going to cope with structural unemployment and the envy, hatred and the social warfare? Because the people with money will not wish to show it," he said.

Super wealthy clients could be targeted as unemployment surges, he said. That would make selling luxury goods more difficult.

"We cannot have 0.1% of 0.1% [of rich individuals] taking all the spoils. And folks, those are our clients. But it's unfair and it is not sustainable," he said to an audience that appeared stunned by his remarks. "So I don't know what new social pact we'll have, but we'd better find one."

The South African has been working in the luxury retail industry since 1976. He and his family are estimated by Bloomberg to be worth about $7 billion, and are among the 20 biggest shareholders in Richemont.

Based in Switzerland, the group owns over a dozen luxury brands, including Montblanc, Chloe, Net-a-Porter and Van Cleef & Arpels.

Rupert said he had been thinking about these issues since reading about the rise of machines in the workplace.

And he appears to be taking his own gloomy predictions seriously.

"We are in for a huge change in society. Get used to it, and be prepared," he said. "Hopefully we will survive it, because we're planning for it."

Richemont did not return requests for comment.

He sees the writing on the wall. I'm sure he's well-versed in world history.

There are several elements at play here, but one has to analyze it carefully to make sure the socialists do not use it to push their agenda of destroying capitalism and property rights.

There is nothing wrong with greater disparity between the wealthy and the non-wealthy, the issue at play here is the destruction of the middle class.

The middle class gets destroyed by the combined forces of socialism for the people, and socialism for the rich. THIS is the issue at hand. Such forces are created by the fight for campaign money and the fight for votes. Conservatives generally go for the money over votes, but the Liberals will go for both (no bankers jailed yet, for example, but more "socialism" for the poor).

The solution of course, is to have true campaign finance reform where corporations are NOT allowed to contribute (to reduce corporate welfare), shrink government so fewer favors are for sale, reinstate property rights to keep incentives to work and save, and reduce welfare for the poor to keep incentives to work.

Wow! Spot on.

Looks like plenty of the super rich are planning a global "panic room."

I guess they expect some heavy sh!t to be going down soon.

Billionaire Bunkers

It's like Noah's Ark, only this time it will be a flood of extremely pissed off poor people.

For the very first time, a modern day Noah’s Ark has opened its doors for an exclusive inside look offering up plans for the ultimate Billionaire bunker and doomsday escape.

Vivos founder and CEO Robert Vicino announced Vivos Europa One which will be an invitation only, five star, underground survival complex, similar to an underground cruise ship for the elite. Each family will be provided a private 2,500 square foot of floor area, capable of two story improvements for a total of 5,000 square feet of private living quarters. With fit and finish comparable to a mega-yacht, each member family will hire their own architect and contractor to build out their living quarters to the custom standard they desire.

The expansive shelter is located in Germany and is one of the most fortified and massive underground survival shelters on Earth.

Not saying I disagree with the guy but you don't see many of these f*ckers doing much about it either. For many of the super-rich who have actively used capitalist or quasi-capitalist markets to gain wealth, once they achieve it they don't want many other people to do the same. Essentially they are trying to keep competition at the top to a minimum.

If these people, not just this guy but plenty of others like Bill Gates, Buffett, Murdoch and on and on were actually serious about what they claim in this article, they'd be throwing lots of money to politicians who actively support freeing up markets in our own country, reducing taxes across the board and their accompanying tax code complexity. But no, we get more government and more crap laws such as Obamacare or some type of crap to grant illegal aliens rights here in this country.

These people never put their money where the mouths are.

The bible predicts that rich men will hide themselves in underground bunkers and pray that they never went in them.

I agree completely. These very rich types that claim they're concerned about the poor and middle class are completely self-serving and hypocritical. Despite their talk, many of them do more to harm the American middle class than anyone, and to put up barriers to competitors.

It's always amazed me that the 'divide and conquer' elites never realized that the 3rd world war zone they are attempting to create and rule is going to backfire on them. I will enjoy watching the miscreants storm their gated communities.

I don't know, man. When it gets that bad, things will be pretty dire for pretty much every human.

The world has never seen a post industrial collapse on the order of a French Revolution. Plenty of empire transfers, but not a collapse.

During all previous (pre-industrial) collapses, people could generally go back to living off the land etc.

Just imagine the horror in big cities when water and electricity stops and supermarkets run out of food.

I don't think anybody's firing up the pitchforks and torches until that happens.

A recent military study predicted a 90% DEATH RATE if there was some kind of electricity killing EMP, for example.

I'm not sure there's ANY kind of rational planning one can (except maybe being rich enough to hide out in a bunker) do to avoid being in that 90% should a "gate-storming-event" occur.

I agree, it will be bad for everyone. But my point is that most of those elites pretty much think only in terms of themselves (very sociopathic), and I guess they don't understand that they will go down with the ship as well. I know they could care less about all of us, but they do care about themselves. It'll be the super-rich that get robbed, unless they are paying armed guards like in South Africa.

Speaking of South Africa, the safest place to be from the rebel gangs is probably in the shanty-towns, even if you are white. No one is going to rob anyone who has nothing.

If the desperate and criminal element move toward the elites' neighborhoods, you can bet they will call out the National Guard and maybe the regular military, martial law will be declared and it'll be crushed. And the media will do an about face from the regular narrative and sing kumbaya. Heck, maybe this is what the elites have in mind.

Just since this spring my middle class part of town that I lived in for years has been suddenly turned into a ghetto. It's hard to find out what was done by HUD, other government agencies, activist groups etc, but it seems that the ghetto areas were dispersed and possibly jails and prisons into the middle/working class areas. Just in the past few weeks there's been several burglaries/home invasions, robbery, 2 shootings, an unusual fatal single vehicle accident, just last night I heard gunshots down my street. Ghetto people are constantly walking up and down the streets an driving poorly/aggressively. At the local supermarkets I'm seeing ghetto people every where I look acting boisterous and mean-mugging. This all happened over a couple months. I didn't even notice any moving trucks. I don't know how they moved so many people in so fast. I'm not exaggerating or kidding you. I feel like Rip Van Winkle waking up to his surrounding totally changed.

Americans use to deal with troublemakers in their community by tar and feather and run out of town on a rail. Now we're suppose to not only tolerate them but celebrate them.

If the world wants to see a preliminary test of how people may react when the sh|t actually hits the fan, turn off the Internet for a week. However people handle that will give a taste of how people are under those kinds of situations. IMO loosing the Internet wouldn't be nearly as bad as loosing electricity, water, etc., but I guarantee you that to most people who have Internet now, it would be. If I were to try and explain to you how bad I have seen people freak out when they loose Internet for even a few hours, you probably would not believe me. It's down right sick. Several years back at one of my other jobs I have seen a computer system go down in a cafeteria. And no joke, have the cafeteria people say "If we don't get this back up and running, people will starve!!". Not kidding.

Are you talking about Revelation 6:15?

15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”
Sounds to me like everyone is going to be trying to hide, not just rich men.
