I decided I wanted to make my shoulders and arms a bit stronger and get some more muscle on them, and I want it done in the quickest and easiest way possible because otherwise I know I'll get put off with no results and stop doing it..

So Saturday I get 7kg worth of text books (haven't got any equipment) and curl them 30 times, then follow with a few chin ups and push ups. I forgot to warm up or anything and that night got all drunk at a party and my arm is really hurting, dunno if it is related could have been something I did while drunk though there isn't a bruise or anything which I usually end up with...

After 30 my arms were fairly tired, and when I stop I start getting muscle twitches... Whats up with that? Its weird... Today I did another 30, then a small break before 15 and another small break before another 10. Is this a decent amount considering I'm just starting? Too much or not enough maybe? How many times a day should I do 30 lifts? And how long might it take before I start seeing results?

Still a bit stumped about how to work my shoulders without proper equipment.. Any ideas? Someone suggested push ups with my hands closer together, that was a lot harder than when my hands were further apart.

I'm trying to figure out why you wasted your money buying textbooks to lift when you could have just bought a couple dumbells. Anyway, read the bulking guide. You're not gonna see much progress unless you lift heavy and eat heavy. Oh yeah, getting trashed at a party right after you work out isn't exactly gonna help you either.

i myself have only started training seriously two week's ago but im pretty sure you wont get anywhere fast by lifting textbooks man.

buy two less beer's a week and get a fvucking gym membership.
trust me it will be worth it.

and really are you sure you only want to bulk your arms?
might look a bit funny if you have mass arms and chicken legs eh?

I didn't buy the textbooks for this, I had them around anyway and I don't have any real fitness equipment so they seemed good enough to use.

And I don't drink beer. I go for spirits, shots of beam. I suppose that doesn't really matter here though.

and really are you sure you only want to bulk your arms?
Yes I'm sure, I don't want to get huge arms just a bit better and a bit more muscle definition. I walk up and down this great big f*cking hill every day so my legs aren't exactly skinny and unfit.

I'm pretty sure I already have a gym membership with my uni, all students get them.. I don't have enough motivation to do that, just finding an object around the house to try was enough and knowing me I'll probably get sick of it soon enough. At least I'm going to try though...

dude, ive been working out for 2 years now..At a gym...lol. The point is, I know my ****....dude,the best way to build big arms is not lift books! Believe me, rather do some push-ups (great for strength and bicep training), pullups (for a strong back, biceps and shoulders), dips (to build some triceps), and obviously some situps for them abs. Try it for like 3 weeks. And oh yeah, the pain you got is because you either hurt your muscle or you are just not used to doing heavy weights. If thats the case, its a good thing to have some stiff arms, it tells you you had a good work out.

weighted dips and weighted chinups will build you a good upperbody. everytime one book more in your backpack and do this for 1year and you will have added some good strength and size, at least 200g protein per day.

If you don't have the motivation to go to the gym you're already paying for with your tuition you're not gonna make any progress what-so-ever. Come back when you feel like making a change in your lifestyle to achieve your goals. :p

Oh and  at building bi's with pushups. Weighted dips and chins though... two of my favorite exercises. :D

Alright thanks for the useful reply, I was a bit worried about the pain in my arms (still lingering a bit) I guess I'll get used to it.

Perhaps my thread title was a bit deceptive.. I don't want to spend hours and hours working out, I just want small increases in size and muscle definition. Well, I'll see how I go so thanks for the replies.
Catch ya.

Edit: How do you do dips? Told you I'm new to this stuff... lol.
