often overhead presses rarely get my delts sore, but i notice that my mid back si a lil sore. i know soreness doesnt relate to growth, but i just thought i might add that.
more on topic, when people mention broad shoulders, is it caused by a wide midback or wide lats or just ripped, buff deltoids?

also sometimes i think that my anterior deltoids pull my arms foward, making me look less wide. is this common, or logical?

From what I understand the biggest factor of broad shoulders is your genetics (bone structure). You may be able to improve it a little bit, but I don't think you can expect huge gains in width.

The Overhead Press is done with a fairly small grip compared to other exercises. Index about an 1 inch from your shoulders.

Broad shoulders == broad shoulders. For a complete physique you need a big back & big traps (deadlifts, rows).

Check also your posture, correct posture has the shoulders back. Letting the shoulders roll forward will make you look smaller & is incorrect posture (leading to injury).

ok thanks stronglifts, i've read your press post.
1. what's the point of putting the bar on the anterior shoulders?
2. 2 inches into the knurling, i usually place right on the outside, touching the knurling. that's no good, eh?
3. touch my chin with my chest? wtf?? lol

thanks! the main thing i noticed i did wrong was just the grip, then. :p

Where would you put it?

Index should be about one inch from your shoulders.

3. touch my chin with my chest? wtf?? lol
Take a look at weightlifting videos of the Clean & Jerk on youtube. When the weight is overhead, chin goes toward the chest. Makes the movement easier.

1. uhm normally ijust put it up,with the support of my forearms? its easier for me, i guess, but this might have something to do with my current 'wide' grip that im using.

2. one inch from my shoulders...eh? are you saying when i rest it on my ant delts, my index should be an inch from my shoulder meat? i have no idea since i dont currently rest it on my shoulders.

3. ah got it.

4. big fan of the site. great job man, hard to beleive you did it all by yourself. keep up the good work.

also, i noticed youre one of the smaller guys on this site, not that that means anything. howd you amass all this information? i guess 10 hyears is a lot of time huh?

thanks!

So you're keeping the bar in the air? Let it rest on your shoulders, it's easier.

2. one inch from my shoulders...eh? are you saying when i rest it on my ant delts, my index should be an inch from my shoulder meat? i have no idea since i dont currently rest it on my shoulders.
Yep your index should be about 1 inch from your shoulder meat.

Thanks for the motivating words, kickureface.

Lots of things that I learned the hard way, had no coaching, lots of trial & error, studying things on my own, reading, talking, ... 10 years is a long time indeed. I still learn new things every day.

got more questions, don't hesitate.
