What's better?

Who would win in a street fight, a pro boxer, or an olympic wrestler?

Oscar De La Hoya or Cael Sanderson?

Joe Mesi or Kurt Angle?

None are "better". Both are different artforms and admired in their own way.

As far as who would win. You can never tell, as the best wrestlers have never really been in a streetfight with any of the best boxers. It is usless to waste your time thinking about it, and I personally really dont care.

If you go off MMA, probably the wrestler.

How many boxers would be able to deal with an immediate takedown. He would get one shot at the wrestler. On the ground he would be dead meat.

If the wrestler starts with a standing up fight, he's doomed.

Who cares? In a 1 on 1 fight, the wrestler will probably win, as grapling > striking in 1 on 1. He will get the take down and bring the fight to the ground if he's an olympic athlete.

A boxer can fight 2 or 3 opponents at once if he's good (Tyson used to train with several sparing partners at once), a wrestler can only fight 1 person at a time. Which do you think will be better in a bar/street fight?

edit - Oh, and I'll put my cash on whoever Clooney says will win, haha.

Well the thing is that I want to take up something. I was thinking either Boxing, wrestling, or jiu jitsu.

Wrestling is the number 1 winning style in Mixed Martial Arts. However boxers don't partake in it, as the simply box.

I heard that most street fights end up on the ground, so it makes sense that wrestling would be the most effective.

I just love boxing though, I feel like I can be decent at it with some practice, but I want to take something up that can benefit me should I ever get involved in a real street fight.

What do you all think????

A semi decent wrestler can take on a few opponents too... grab a limb and break it... NEXT!

Who will win? Noone can tell. If the wrestler could get close to the boxer, then it's a sure victory...

But then sparring with some guys in boxing... I'm starting to think it's impossible :p

As for multiple opponents... you need at least a 9mm with a hi cap magazine... or better yet an AK

If the fight goes on standing, the boxer would most likely win. That's because he could strike, and I mean STRIKE. He's trained to punch and that's his lethal side.

However, if the fight goes on the ground, chances are the wrestler would win it.

IMO this is how it would go:

Boxer would have to knock out the wrestler before he would get a chance to jump in and grab his waist.

You're assuming that the boxer gets in one VERY powerful shot right away. You forget that wrestlers are trained to have quick reflexes as well. In all honesty, he'd probably be able to dogdge the punch, or at least move enough so that the punch doesn't land completely solidly. Provided they were both pros.

I agree.

It's just the reason I'm assuming the powerful shot is because it's the boxer's only chance. Once he lets the wretler grab his waist, it's not his fighting ground.

Yup. So it looks like wrestler would win one on one. If it was MORE than one on one, it'd be a tougher call. Cause while the wrestler's grappling with one guy, others could be kickin' him.

Unless he just does some throws and stays on his feet, he'd be a dead duck.

PS - I was captain of a pretty good wrestling team back in high school and also took wrestling for self-defense in military school (they offerred boxing and wrestling, and if a military school considers wrestling good self-defense, I'm gonna say it's probably pretty good self-defense)

Take both if you have the time. If you're a good in your stand up game, you'll finish the fight before it goes to the ground. Look at Mirko Cro Cop, he beat the shyt out of alot of grapplers until he got tapped out by an arm bar by a Brazilian dude...then he combined his stand up game with grappling and he recently defeated a wrestler in the latest PrideFC via guilotine...not even a standing knock out.

The greatest mixed martial arts guy ever is Randy the Natural Coutere. And he is a wrestler

He has beaten Vitor Belfort (a great puncher and jiu jitsu master) 2 out of 3 times. The only time he did lose was because of a cut Vitor due to a big punch Vitor landed.

The thing is that boxers don't take part in the UFC, they simply box. So its tough to say how boxing would do.

What do you think is the best self defense classes I could take? One that could help me in a real street fight.

For best self-defense ina street fight against an average guy, I would say something with a minimal amount of punches and mostly grappling/holds/throws. You figure most street fights are going to be people throwing punches from a distance. They probably won't kick. They probably won't move. They'll just expect you to take a beating and throw punches back. And if you DO get in close, 9 times out of 10 they're gonna go for your basic headlock. So you wanna be able to defend against punches, and headlocks.

So I'd say judo. Or kick-boxing mixed in with judo.

So you'll have the fighting from a distance (albeit minimal) and movement from a kickboxing type discipline, and how to control your oppoenent with holds and grappling with judo.

Also, Aikido always struck me as pretty useful whenever I saw it being practiced (think Steven Seagal - which seems to be mostly holds and grips again with minimal punches . . .)

Of course I've never had the privilege to have formalized study in any of these. These are just my observations from watching them battle rings (judo at olympics) and sparring situations at gyms (kickboxing)

I did a quick google on this Randy fellow before. He was a great greco-roman wrestler, who now fights in UFC tournaments. And does very well in those.
