Master Don Juan
go see it.
he wasn't a 5 star stud.. but closespeed dawg said:The story didn't exactly go down like the movie says it did. Let's just say that family was very interested in Ole Miss getting a 5 star stud offensive tackle.
Don't be fooled. I was fairly close to this situation and know the truth. Hollywood can do a number on the truth.
This film is blatant propoganda. The whole reason that family adopted him is because they were Ole Miss fans and saw a potential offensive lineman to add to the lineup. Had it been any other kid from the streets they wouldn't have lifted a finger.speed dawg said:The story didn't exactly go down like the movie says it did. Saw the movie for the 2nd time today. I know Hollywood likes to twist things around to make an interesting movie. I was thinking the same thing too. They address the issue in the movie when Michael is talking to the NCAA lady.Dust 2 Dust said:This film is blatant propoganda. Men frequently err by talking too much. They often monopolize conversations, droning on and on about topics that bore women to tears. They think they're impressing the women when, in reality, they're depressing the women.

Sean Tuohy was an Ole Miss grad (played hoops there), and "adopted" Oher (& later added him to his will) to ensure he went to Ole Miss. Tuohy is one of the best basketball players in Ole Miss history & wanted the "afflete" (who'd failed 2 grades & had a crackhead Momma) to play for the Rebels.Ken785 said:But why would they adopt him and do all these good things for him just so they can get him to go to the school they love? They didnt need to adopt him but they did.
Whether it was for their own self interests or not, would you not agree that they gave these kids a chance to reach their potential and do positive things they would never have gotten a chance to do had they not been helped?Dust 2 Dust said:Sean Tuohy was an Ole Miss grad (played hoops there), and "adopted" Oher (& later added him to his will) to ensure he went to Ole Miss. Oher also cheated on some of the famous "Mormon grade grab" online classes from BYU, and magically improved his high school GPA by 2 full points within a matter of weeks. It was a 0.6 early in high school.
FYI, there was a White HS football coach in Durham that took in a sumo from Richmond, VA (housed him and fed him for a couple years) and, of course, put him on his football team. The sumo's background was the typical story of a black single mammy with several kids that didn't really give a crap about motherhood.
I'm NOT cool at all with what the coach did (took resources away from his own family), but most of these stories have a "self-interest" aspect to it.
I agree. Even if it was a purely selfish reason, the fact remains that Michael got a chance that made his life better. He has a great career, money and is in the golden position TO HELP OTHER YOUNG MEN LIKE HIMSELF!Ken785 said:Whether it was for their own self interests or not, would you not agree that they gave these kids a chance to reach their potential and do positive things they would never have gotten a chance to do had they not been helped?
Actually, the word here is that he stayed with the family for 8 months, but he was already living with someone and enrolled in the same high school when they took him in. Doesn't make for such a good movie, does it? But it's not important to me since I'm not getting any money.WaterTiger said:Just saw the movie this afternoon and LOVED IT! You think his life would have been better without the Touhys? Better staying in the slums with no education, no prospects and no hope?
If this is the result of "selfish behavior" then we should ALL be so selfish! If a child shows strong potential, then encourage it! Nurture it! We'll all be better for it!

Sean Touhy was and is a HUGE Ole Miss donor. They throw around money like crazy for football players. Old school mentality that got left in the 60's along with their alleged national titles. I mean, look at them now, the KKK is all over their campus.
If you want to go out and adopt black guys from the hood, go do it. If this guy hadn't been a Parade All-American, the Touhy's would have been nowhere to be found. And yeah, I'm sure Mrs. Touhy just strutted right into Orange Mound and said, "You threatened my son, you threaten me" to a bunch of Memphis gang bangers. They'd have jacked her ass up in some baaaaad ways and she'd have turned up on the First 48. I know, I lived in Memphis and the inner city is one of the most dangerous in the country.
