From what I know Borderline is someone with inner defense mechanism skewed to the point that they will always assume they dont have a problem, they are controlling, they badmouth their exes (and you later), they love your attention, and so on.

But I always thought same applies to Bipolar disorder.

So whats the difference?

People with Bipolar disorder rotate between periods of depression and periods of mania (which features high energy and often psychotic behavior).
Borderline Disorder is a personality disorder associated with self destructive behavior, instability, and drama seeking.

Bi Polar disorder is a psychotic disorder that can have symptoms similar to schizophrenia, in addition to the mood swings.

Borderline is a personality disorder defined by dysfunctional relationships with people, manipulation, self harm, poor coping skills, impulsivity.

Some traits overlap but people with bi polar don't neccesarily have the kinds of dysfunctional relationships like people with borderline personality disorder.

Borderline Personality disorders function (so to speak) in tandem with relationships with family, friends, romantics partners etc. These people can't be alone, they use others as a life prosthetic. Bi polar people can be sociable or loners and don't have that need to suck the life out of everyone they encounter.

Bipolar is more common. It is found often in men, too. Borderlines are almost exclusively female. Bipolar usually just means fits of rage, followed by regret.

Borderline is much more complex. My ex-wife is a mental health counselor who grew up with a borderline for a sister. Having to deal with her sister is what led her to be interested in mental health. Later in life, I also was with a borderline pd girl for a while. I've made a lot of posts on here about the disorder. It is centered around a traumatic childhood abandonment, which the woman's psyche forces her to re-live in her future relationships. BPD women tend to be seductresses, usually very attractive. Ones I knew smoked cigarettes, liked tattoos, loved drugs. They are most attracted to men who are unavailable, and they are frequently mistresses to married men. They draw men in, offer the most intense relationship you've ever had, and then must push you away to feel the resulting abandonment. They literally cannot have a healthy relationship, at least for very long. They want you right on the edge, not out of their life completely, but not in a healthy relationship either.

If they don't kill themselves with drugs or domestic violence episodes, after a long history of turbulent relationships, borderlines will tend to give up on men and settle into single life as a spinster.

Bipolar is not a psychotic disorder.

If it coincides with schizophrenia symptoms, it is called schizoaffective bipolar.

OP, you should not be asking people on this forum for mental health advice. And people on here should stop diagnosing strangers.

Psychosis in bipolar disorder can happen during manic or depressive phases. But it's more common during manic episodes. People who have bipolar psychosis experience a combination of symptoms. The symptoms occur in both bipolar disorder and psychosis.

It’s a broad spectrum disorder and can well be psychotic…

@RichardTheFrog , know what is what before you post…

They are both crazy as are all women, but I prefer the borderlines because it's like a huge game of chess.I have been in a sexual relationship with a level 5 borderline for over a year year now (don't try this at home kids ) Just got back from spending Christmas with her,and got back home today and my viagra pills are missing out of my suitcase of course she has no idea where they could have gone ;) but says she will search diligently for them before she drives down to see me New Years Day....lol but her sister could have taken them because she is a borderline as well and I suspect she has a crush on me and is jealous...we shall see...

He's not asking for mental health advice. He's asking what the difference is between borderline and bi polar.

I work with clients who have bi polar and when they are manic some of them do things that would be classified as psychotic, like get arrested at a museum for demanding staff to return a painting that they believed belonged to their great grandfather and was stolen by the Nazis.

There are varying levels of bi polar and that was an extreme level of someone in a manic stage and off their meds.

There's a lot of overlap but the MAIN difference is this:

Bipolar is a MOOD disorder and Borderline is an EMOTION disorder. Bipolar have trouble regulating their mood. While borderline have intense emotions and have trouble controlling them.

I don't have a lot of experience with Bipolars, but I did have a 5year relationship with a girl that showed a lot of Borderline traits and I also studied a lot about BPD.

Here's what is common amongst borderlines:

-She will see you as all good or bad. There isn't much in between. One day you are the best guy to ever walk the earth, the next you are horrible and that's when they treat you like schitt.

-They have a big fear of being abandoned. Its hard for them to be alone or do something on their own. They are always in relationships.

-They have a hard time regulating their emotions. Get upset easily over trivial things. Overly emotional in general.

-If you don't respond to them quick enough they get upset and feel like you don't want them. Never mind the fact that you might have been busy/not by your phone.

-Their feelings are controlled by external events, they have a hard time keeping external events from effecting them. A healthy person can ignore what others say and keep it from effecting them.

-They are super sweet or a biatch. Rarely an in between.

-Projects

-Shows little empathy

-Jealous/Insecure

-Panic Attacks/Anxiety

They will make you feel like nothing you do is good enough.
