I took a bet with a friend for 50 bucks, it turns out I won the bet and he conceded, we had a deal and everything, shook on it , etc..

I told him to pay me whenever he can, today he turns around and says to me:

"You not getting your money, deal with it."

So I told him until he does give me the money he can bugger off.

Was I right to do this? What should I have done?

Note: He also owes me a new cricket bat which he took responsiblity for and broke.

friends use friendship to get out of crap.

if it was a serious bet, you get a third party to hold all funds before the bet takes place.

me and my friends used to play Twisted metal Black and Madden for money... whoever wasn't in the game held the money (it was 3 of us).. the money wasn't important, it's just the princaple of the matter. no matter how much money you have, it's nice to go to say, red lobster and know that you are paying for it because you kicked your best friends ass in twisted metal black (sweettooth)

Exactly, im not interested in HOW MUCH it is, its the principle of the matter, cos I bet my bottom dollar that if I had lost the bet, Id be paying him.

More thoughts?

What you should do is go out somewhere with him, maybe the bars or a restaurant or something, then just dine and dash on his ass.

Any "friend" that won't pay a bet he owes you isn't a real friend.

I have two rules when it comes to friendship:

1) Never go into business with your friends.

2) Never ask for money or lend money to a friend.

Now your bet was a small sum of money, is that worth ending a friendship? Your friend is an ass for not paying you but you are an ass for making such a big deal about it. If it takes only fifty bucks to be pissed on each other then you two were not as good as friends to begin with.

yeah I really don't do the whole lending money to friends things.. that just opens a can of worms. The only time I did was when my old best friend called me and asked for money to pay a ticket, because it was the due date. other than that, don't ask, i won't ask you

You think loaning money to friends is bad, try loaning money to family. You'll never see it again.

i loaned my mom some money about 6 months ago. I didn't need it but it's the fact that she told me she was going to pay it back on this particular date.

so I happen to ask her about it, and she CURSED ME OUT, telling me what was all the sacrifices she made for me worth, blah blah blah.

I should have known better. I didn't need it but dont' tell me you are going to do something and dont' do it. she could have said "give me x amount" and I would have

Yeah with family its different. If I loan money to a family before hand I have to accept the fact that I might not see my money in the near future or ever again (its not worth the hassle to make a fuss about it and create anomosity for life), but good families don't tend to ask to borrow money all the time just on rare occassions. Then again if your family ask's from you to borrow money many times over and never pay you back maybe you should begin to evaluate your relationship with these people.
