I was gonna be a cop. Now I think I wanna get into the secret service with the idea of getting into the FBI at some point, probably after I get some experience under my belt with the SS. Being a cop still seems pretty good. My dad just retired from the Sherriff's department and is pulling in well over 100,000 g's per year and he only has a AA degree. The only reason I decided not to go with police work is because with police, everybody has to put into their time pardon the pun. I wanted to do detective work or at least specialty work like anti-gangs, but I wasn't willing to put in 10 years of working traffic and writing parking tickets to get there. But hell, some people love it you know? To each his own.

Cons:
Not enough money for the jeopardy of the work involved.
You have to be hypocritical. It's ok if cops run a stop sign but you can't?
You can get killed.
Pschologically you get fvcked in the noggin'.
You're immediately stereotyped as a donut lover.

Pros:
Some women love guys in uniform.
You can legally carry a firearm (that you have to purchase). Wait, so can law abiding citizens . . . scratch that one.

Gee, lemmee guess?

I heard being a cop is actually a boring job. You spend 90% of the time writing reports and driving around, while the other 10% dealing with the lowlifes of society. Before you become one find out if its really a job that you want to do.

exactly. it ain't the tv or movies. too many guys have been watching too many reruns of chips. most cops work in quiet little communities where passing out speeding tickets is the sexiest thing they ever get to do. being a cop is super safe. if you want a dangerous american job you should become a truck driver or crab fisherman.

if you want excitement get into private security and get your a$$ sent to iraq. haven't you boys ever read soldier of fortune? :p

females attracted to cops? uh, once again you have been watching too many chips' reruns.

I agree with pretty much everything you said except for the hypocritical part. Cops are running stop signs to get to a call quicker. Sure, you get the occasional cop that abuses this, just like any other profession. Its a perk of the job I guess. I mean, you work at blockbuster, you get free rentals. You work at a car dealership, you get discounts on new vehicles. You become a cop, you get out of the occasional speeding ticket. haha!

It all depends on what you want to do with your life. In the long run, its not worth the money and other smaller benefits if you are doing something you don't love doing. Since you may be young like many of us here, you should try getting a feel for how the profession really is and talking to people involved in the work.

My advice is don't ever embark on a career just because the ladies will like it. It is pretty much like selling your soul. Do it because you want to.

VERY poor representation.

Cons?

- It's up to the individual to decide what is enough money to do a job, or not. And if you live in a small town or a city with low crime, then there is little to NO jeopardy in the work involved.
Wrong. You mean they don't have thieves and crackheads in small towns?

There is nothing hypocritical about certain measures that police officers take to defend the public. What do you want cops to do, stop at stop signs in the middle of a high-speed pursuit while the criminal runs them? Please.
Get your head out of your ass. I expect civil servants to follow the same laws as they push. Namely, don't run a yellow light or roll through a stop sign.

Who says you get psychologically f'ucked? Maybe if you're already an unstable individual, or have been watching too many movies...sure.
Obviously you don't know jacksh!t about the psychological impact of law enforcement and the pressure that comes with it.

Personally, I wouldn't want someone walking around with a firearm that would be bothered by a couple of pot-smoking teenagers stereotyping them as a "donut lover." But that's just me.
Most card carrying Republicans wouldn't.

As for the pros, you can only think of one? That some women love men in uniform? Come on now. How about:

1) One of the highest paid jobs you can get without a college degree, with fantastic benefits.
2) Unique and exciting job environment. (Opportunity to shoot people)
3) Endless advancement opportunities. (Rip off drug dealers and thieves)
4) Retire in 20 years. (or die in the line of duty)
5) Save lives, help people. ( people don't care about you when you're dead)
6) Be your own boss while on patrol. (no eyes watching over your shoulder)
7) Use your own discretion and judgment on the job. (see above)
8) All your coworkers have passed an extensive background investigation.
9) Help your community. ( Ok, this is plausable)
10) Easily move into other fields of law enforcement. (what's the suicide rate among cops?)

Let's be fair, now.

Yes, let's be fair.

I've been a patrol officer for 3 years.

I started out as an auxiliary/reserve. The hiring process isn't as intense as a regular officer, and you will get experience and training as real as it gets, and 80-95% of the power of a real officer... Lots of departments have auxiliary/reserve, big departments and small. It gives you a free ticket into the field and allows you to work as an officer and train as an officer around your "other/real job", college, or any other gig you have going. Yes, most departments let auxiliary/reserves carry a gun after passing a 40 hour qualification.. Do your homework before joinin an an auxiliary/reserve, though. Some departments treat their auxiliary/reserves like total crap. However, some departments worship them. That is because the officers know that the reserve/auxiliary might be the one coming to back them up some night.. Some auxiliary/reserve get paid, and some are volunteers, like volunteer firemen many smaller towns have..

Anyway, most departments will advertise that they are "testing for officers". An officer goes through the application process, and the department chooses a list of potential hirees that applied. Other folks don't make the list.. Then if an opening comes, the dept hires their preference(s) off that list.. The auxiliary/reserve thing, again, will help you in our position on the list ;-) The fact of the matter is that if you prove yourself as an auxiliary/reserve to your department, they will "have their eye on you".. Some departments won't take you after age 35 for full or part time without "previous police experience", others don't care. The application process from A-Z can be intense. Physical tests, written tests, lie detector test, psych eval, background check, intenese interviews. If you threw a rock and broke your neighbors window when you were 12 years old, be prepared to talk about it..

Anyway, once hired.. You go to police academy. In Illinois, full time academy is M-F, home on weekends if you want, for 10 or 12 weeks. You are paid during this time. Once you pass the acadamy, you come back and start your field training/probationary period actually working. In some departments, this can be very rough. It's the period where you COULD get treated like "the rookie" complete with many of the torments you typically see on TV and in the movies.. Starting as auxiliary/reserve helps with this too becuase you already will know the guys you are working with, and hopefully, you've already proved yourself to them so they don't need to "test" you as hard as a rookie/probie they have never worked with... Your fellow officers have to know you have their back, and its up to you to prove it, that's the bottom line....

Anyway, if you survive your probationary period, you are good to go.. All departments are different but yeah there is a lot of paperwork on the job.. If you suck at writing, you will struggle as a cop, because reports are extremely important. In general, people either worship the ground an officer stands on, or, they hate the officer's guts.. There are a lot of "dirty cops" which give us all a bad rep.. I am the first to admit that some officers don't know how to handle the power they are given and keep their emotions in check with it.. Many other officers are like me; laid back, friendly to everybody we come across, physically and mentally ready exhert authority if called on, and hoping each and every day that we don't actually have to exhert authority.

Ok guys, if you are a cop hater please don't flame me because I am just another dude on this forum, OK!

WHEW! This post is long enough, I am going to stop.. Any questions??????

Nice to see that you argue all over the website, great use of your time. Good luck becoming a cop, they would never hire a man of such leftist viewpoints as yourself. :kick:

I That's it. Turn it to politics the minute someone mentions your drug habits on the net.

Your whole attitude reeks of the gangsta-rap culture mantra of "F'uck da police!", which often results in prison, death, or both. I'm sure the OP is looking for clear-thinking individuals to seriously discuss the option of becoming a police officer. Not far-left anti-government propoganda. Your rhetoric falls on a deaf ear.
What the fvck? My drug habits? Jackhole, this is your retort? That's the best you got? I accuse you of being a Republican and you accuse me of being a junkie? This proves how embarrassing it truly is to be a right winger. Good thing the Dems have control. 'Pub's on the run.

As for me being a "hip gangsta' wannabe" you are truly a nincompoop. This is about the pros and cons of being a cop. One of my closest friends is a Deputy Sheriff and he shares in my point of view. Contrary to your opinion (as minimal as it is) I have a healthy respect for the law but it's well known that what I've stated is true. Especially the hypocritical part.

You seem to be the exception with my experiences with "THE MAN". If what you say is true then you have my full support and props for your dedication. It's easy to badmouth the cops and say how you don't need them but get robbed or your sh!t stolen and who do you call?
