So I'm needing a trade I can make decent money in part-time until I finish college--then I came across an ad for bartending school. AND they guarantee a job in the town of your choice...which is great, because drinking is the #1 activity where I'm going to school (drinking town with a football problem.)

So who here has done the bartender thing? Any tips/tricks/outrageous stories?

Save your money and don't go to bartending school. Just go barback to get experience and you get paid also. Even when you get out of bartending school they will stick you at barback for a bit.

The issue I see with bartending isn't getting a job, there are always lots of bartending gigs to be found. The issue is getting on at a hot club, which is where you want to be, not one filled with old alkys. I'm not sure if bartending school would help or if you just need to approach the clubs you want to work at and ask how to get started there. Maybe someone who actually works at one of these places can elaborate. Whatever you do remember that bartending is a *vocation*, it is what is, and you don't want to be a 50 year old bartender!!!! I'd keep my emphasis on my college degree and make sure the club knows bartending can't get in the way of studies.

That's true, but having a trade to fall back on is never a bad idea...I'm wishing I would have gone to vo-tech in HS for free when I had the chance. I'm a college man all the way, but it'd be nice to have something that pays more than I'm making now working at a bowling alley while I'm still in school.

A person can never have enough skills...besides, girls only want guys with good skills! /napoleon dynamite voice
