Baldness, or is this the final stage of puberty?

I remember in school during "sex ed" or "family life" or whatever when they were describing what happens to males in the end stages of puberty, one of the things that happens is the hairline usually recedes some, whether you're destined to go bald or not.

How do you tell if you are going to go bald or if this is just that final stage of puberty?

I also heard that the old wives' tale about the fact that it is a man's mother's father who determines whether or not his grandsons go bald. My mom's dad had a full head of hair (albeit it was blue eventually), so does this mean I'm okay? I read that the trait that determines baldness is on the X chromosome (which is the chromosome given by a boy's mother). Or, am I doomed to become bald because my dad is? Could it be a mixture of the two?

My scalp has receded on the sides, the widow's peak is still there. The top of my head seems fine, its hard to see it though.

I want to take action now and not wait anymore. The rogaine box said it does not fix a receded, adult hairline. My general care doctor the other day said that it does. Maybe Rogaine cannot market that it fixes a slightly receded hairline for legal reasons? Maybe it doesn't fix that part all the time, so it can't be promoted as doing such?

I'm probably not the first to consider all of these factors, what do you all think?

I think it isn't something you should worry about yet. I sort of get the impression that you're pretty young (talking about sex ed classes and such) so if it's going to happen it'll start in your early 20's.

I'm 25. As soon as I get the time, I'm going to buy the Wal-Mart brand rogaine to give it a try. The patent for rogaine expired in 1996 so there are generic brands available. I'm going to pay with cash to avoid all of those annoying internet advertisements.

Male pattern baldness, which you seem to be referring to here, has genetic as well as enviromental/hormonal causes. Genetics seems to be a big thing. I think hormone levels, and the levels/activity of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase also play a part. Male pattern baldness is thought to be x-linked recessive. Your mom likely has a dominant and recessive allele of the gene. Like most complex phenotypes, however, I think its probably pleiotropic, or determined by more than one allele... add in environment/hormonal factors, and you really have a party!

hair is totally overrated. If you're a big jacked up dude just shave your head... girls love it. Big, muscular, lean and bald is fundamentally hypermasculine and alpha... chicks eat it up. If you're not jacked up and lean, then you have something to train for. I never get why guys worry about losing hair, I mean WTF!? I have a full thick head of hair, and I've been buzzing it for years now.

I buzzed my hair for my entire stripping career.... I've made tens of thousands of dollars off my looks and build, include my buzzed/shaved head.

Seriously guys, don't even worry about it.

Rogaine fvcks up your sex drive, potentially permanently~ don't take it if u don't have to

Never try to read a woman's mind. It is a scary place. Ignore her confusing signals and mixed messages. Assume she is interested in you and act accordingly.

I totally agree with Fugly, BUTTT I'm bias because I am lucky since I have good hair genetics, shave my head to a number 1 anyways and at 31 am only receding slightly....

But on the flip side I will say you should have an attractive face because if you do decide to shave your head or go Mr. Clean all the attention is on your facial features. Meaning a big nose sticks out even more, bad teeth etc etc.

And for the record from everything I've read, Rogaine doesn't stop hair loss, it may re-grow some existing hair, but if your going to be bald, your going to be bald. Not much you can do about it.

Don't underestimate what stress does to hair. You should see before and after pics from my law school class lol.
I kinda agree with you. Stress is one reason why a an individual especially men could undergo baldness, as we all know stress could affects everything about us.

Maeisgood,
consider a few things.

Minoxidil only works on the crown, top back portion of the scalp. So only use it on that area.
Increase your intake of B vitamins. Purchase a B Complex supplement.
Increase your intake of Biotin and Panthenol (B vitamins in addition)
Try Revivogen.
Start taking a Saw Palmetto supplement.
Increase your intake of Omega 3.
There are also certain leave in amino acid spray conditioners.
There is also something called a LaserComb by a company called Hairmax.

There are also surgical options of course.

Good luck.
