I was at the gym today, and some guy who I see there often sees me warming up for deadlifts and offers some suggestions.

He pretty suggests starting deadlifts in an ATG squat position, but with the spine perfectly vertical. Then, you drive your feet into the ground and push until you're fully standing. He also suggested filling the bar with only smaller weights (6 25lb plates instead of 3 45 lbs plates, for example) so the bar can be lower and you can squat down that far. Supposedly, this is so your lower back doesn't get injured.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but deadlifts are meant to be a lower back exercise (to some degree). Any thoughts on this guy's ideas?

You can deadlift while standing on a platform, to increase the range of motion. This has the same effect as using small plates. It's supposed to make you stronger off the floor.

atg deadlifts are not deadlifts-they're goon lifts! don't listen to the guy who's loading the bar with 25's to deadlift.
stick to conventional
deadlifts are a full body exercise.

I went on about this in Quagmire's log.
I won't bother, seeing that your other two threads are of the same ilk and you seem to know everything.

Yes you start it as a squat, no it's not a lower back exercise.

Don't be snide, MrS. I'm asking a question, not looking for a flamewar with you.

I disagree that the deadlift starts as a squat, and so does Mr.Rippetoe.

Yes leg drive is important, but it is a pull.

Nice link Quagmire, you saved some poor sap from taking MrS's incorrect (go figure) advice.

I'm glad I've been doing them the right way, it's tough getting used to a new form on a lift like this.

I won't bother replying in depth, suffice to say have fun with your deadlifts.
