I live not far from St Louis and usually go to a few Cardinals baseball games every year. This year, a guy got mugged leaving the game. He did what you're supposed to do, in any advice I have ever read. He threw down his money and turned to run away. But he only got a few steps before the mugger shot him in the back. He'll live, but the bullet hit his spine, and he's never going to walk again. He and the woman with him said they saw the mugger coming several yards away. He jumped out of a car and started coming at them

That story changed my mind about how to handle a mugger. I'd rather die fighting back than live in a wheelchair because I ran away.

About the only thing that makes sense, is that you just have to live by the old adage that you can't control what others do, but you can control how you react. That's the only real freedom in this crazy world. So yes, if I ever get faced with this situation, I'll die trying. Probably try and keep the situation cool as long as possible, until you know it's life or death.

I tell me wife all the time, if someone approaches you in a parking lot, start screaming and run. Never get in the car. Your odds are much better. They pretty much go to 0 when you get in the car.

HUD has a "fairness" division that does undercover sting operations. In my small town, someone complained that one of the trailer parks, which was not even that nice as far as trailer parks go, was telling non-whites that they did not have vacancies when they did. So HUD sent undercover Federal agents to the trailer park, pretending to be potential applicants, and busted them turning away black people. They fined them $250,000. I'm not sure the trailer park is worth that much. That money goes right back into funding the next sting operation, after they give the "victims" a few thousand bucks.

I'm full of questions. Of all the crimes that undercover Federal agents should be investigating, is keeping blacks out of the trailer park really at the top of our priorities? Does keeping anyone out of a trailer park really hold them back in life that much? And does it not occur to anyone, if this is the worst crime going on, do we really need these undercover sting ops? Are HUD's Fairness Police really the best use of our Federal law enforcement resources?

The difference is one is sent by an inside influence (owner) trying to improve the store and the latter is an outside influence (government) ruining it by introducing bad employees, shoplifters, and armed robbers. I don't understand why you have such a hard on for HUD and government agencies when you were just an apartment manager. Without HUD 'diversifying' neighborhoods, you'd still have tenets and apartment managers, just better tenets and less chaos. I could understand someone employed in a government agency being biased.
