Thoughts on luck, guys?

I'd say I just had some recent bad luck this weekend. Went to a party, come out, my liscense plates (front and back) have been stolen, wake up the next morning with a cold sore in my f*cking mouth, classes start next week (end of summer), and I pretty much get rejected by a girl who isn't even in my league. Luck or coincidence, who knows...

"For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me."

This is an insight in a story of a man who lost everything, and it gives us a clue in one of the factors of bad things happening. In this case it is the fear of loss and being afraid of something happening.

The more energy and thought you give into fear the more you give it power to affect your life.

At this point you probably have a woman (or multiple women) chasing you around, calling you all the time, wanting to be with you. So let's talk about how to KEEP a woman interested in you once you have her. This is BIG! There is nothing worse than getting dumped by a woman that you really, really like.

Let's look at this through the perpective of David Hume.

What seems more likely: there is a universal force of luck that brings balance to the world and creates situations for people, or you simply just were having a bad week?

Also the fact that the mildness of those coincidences has led you to believe in the concept of luck makes me doubt your understanding of how things work in the world.

Go and read a book explaining the concept of science and you will understand that things don't happen for a purpose.

I have all the bad luck in the world, you want some of it??? However, I do believe being in the right place at the right time and if that is considered luck, then yes I believe.

What are the odds of flipping a coin 10 times and all of them being heads? Less than 0.1%. But if you flip a coin enough times, you can eventually expect to get a sequence of 10 consecutive heads. It's the same thing with real life events.

You call that bad luck? Let's be honest: people are going to steal from you, school will start on a certain day, most women will reject you, and some weird thing will show up on an embarrassing place. On top of that, a million things in life will show up to annoy on the way to whatever you're trying to accomplish. I've been there. The thing is to gain a better perspective on stuff and shrug it off. Be happy the people didn't take your car, you at least get to go school instead of working in minimum wage hell, you didn't get tied up with some psycho, and you woke up.

Once there was a farmer, who had two sons. One day one of his sons came back with a wild horse that he'd found and captured.

All his neighbors said, "Wow, you are so lucky."
He said, "maybe."

The next day his son was trying to tame the horse, fell, and broke his leg. It was one week before harvest.

All his neighbors said, "Wow, you are so unlucky."
He said, "maybe."

The next day the army came, as their country was suddenly at war. They were collecting all the men to fight. Since his son's leg was broken, they didn't take him.

All his neighbors said "Wow, you are very lucky."
He said, "maybe."

Moral of the story? Events that you can't control are effectively random. They are only "lucky," or "unlucky," if you give them such meaning.

Ask yourself is something "unlucky" happens, what is the upside? What did you learn? How can you use that knowledge to improve yourself to better deal with unforeseen circumstances?

To the OP, can you think of any upsides to those random events?

What did you learn, and how can you use that information to improve yourself?

I like this, I agree with this. Every situation in the world has some form of advantage and disadvantage. And it also highlights how luck is all relative. You could say you're so unlucky that your number plate got stolen, and that if you had just parked your car somewhere else it wouldn't have happened, but in the same breath you could say you're so lucky that all that got stolen was your number plates when your whole car could have been stolen. Either way it's irrelevant, it makes no difference to what has happened or dealing with it. Your situation can always be better and it can always be worse.

But I think 'luck' is a good way of describing an instance where the odds are against you yet it goes in your favour, and vice versa.

(I say all this yet still out of habit I salute magpies if I see one on it's own and smile if I see two or more together, lol)

British psychologist Richard Wiseman, in his books Quirkology and The Luck Factor, shows that lucky people have four different traits than unlucky people. In essence, they are more optimistic, more resilient, and therefore put themselves into more opportunities to have "luck."

And to quote from Robert Greene's 48 Laws of Power:
Law 10: Infection: Avoid the Unhappy and Unlucky

You can die from someone else’s misery – emotional states are as infectious as disease. You may feel you are helping the drowning man but you are only precipitating your own disaster. The unfortunate sometimes draw misfortune on themselves; they will also draw it on you. Associate with the happy and fortunate instead.
