It depends on the type of meditation you want to do and the goals set. Razor mentions good advice for a specific type of meditation.. Choose one and do it.
It comes easier for some people than others, but focusing and calming gets easier the more you do it. An article I read said awareness meditation changed your brain structure in 8 weeks which isn't too long of a time considering there's no drugs involved.
