I hate to say this, but these drinks are extremely addictive. I "hate to say" because they make me feel very good. I feel a relaxed, focused, high-energy buzz without the jitteriness of caffeine (although they apparently contain immense quantities of caffeine).

I have tried RedBull, and it's not nearly the same and tastes bad too. The Lo-Carb Monsters taste awesome. It seems to have just the right amount of carbonated-ness without giving you that bloated/gassy feeling of regular sodas and other energy drinks. I have stayed up over 72 hours at a time, and I was still very mentally productive. Not to mention that after staying up for that long, I could do twice my average number of consecutive push-ups and still feel like running a marathon.

I am also much more estudious, talkative, funny, flirtatious, creative, and overall everything I want to be - on top of the world when I drink Monsters. When I don't, I feel way below par.

The only problem is quitting. I get killer headaches and fatigue when I stop. I think another problem is they are a little pricey at $2 per 16oz can. I drink about 2-3 cans a day.

I have never tried cocaine, but my guess is this the closest I will ever get to it.

Does anyone know of any less-harmful substitutes?

I've been into the lo-carb energy drinks for a while. Monster is okay, but I prefer Rockstar's lo-carb. Redbull sucks - too stinky. Anyway, I've been mixing it up and getting one of all I find. I tried one over the weekend: "BAWLS". Best one I've tried yet as far as drinkability/enjoyability is concerned - donno about "effects".

Anyway, I don't really drink them like crazy except when I'm out trapping on the weekends - then I might have 2 or 3 in a day. Usually though, I just have one when I don't feel like coffee.

The thing is about those drinks, they crank up your metabolism. Which is what attracted me to them most since mine has been pretty lethargic.

A bumped into a guy buying a dozen of them and I asked what was up with that. He told me, "Screw the subway diet, I lost 60 lbs since I started drinking 3 or 4 of these a day instead of soda." It makes sense.

The no calorie sweeteners have not been proven to cause health problems, but mass quantities are probably not healthy, either. The stuff does give rats cancer in large doses.

You can get the same effects from green tea if you make it strong enough. There is caffeine and a metabolism boost, and it does not give me an acid stomach like energy drinks. The health benefits from the tea are numerous.

...not to mention green tea is far less expensive. I pop those green tea caplets like they're going out of style, and it's a nice boost without the caffiene jitters.

I wonder why this sh1t doesn't do nothing for me -- it has the same effect of a cup of water.
