Any of you guys into Harleys?

Just bought a used Sporty, only 5,000 miles, because it's strangely easy on my back (had surgery in June).

I figure it's the middle of December, I just got out of back surgery... perfect time to buy a motorcycle...

I've been riding a bare-bones GoldWing (no fairings, just a raw frame) and a Honda all these years, but both those bikes hurt my back so it's time to retire them.

Anyone else here into Harleys?

I was looking at one last month, but just couldn't do it. They are so popular that the prices never seem to drop below a couple thousand, even for older bikes.

Dealerships rape you on maintenance. Mine wants $350 for an oil change. If I had one, I would invest in a shop manual, some sort of stand to hold it upright while you work on it, and whatever other specialty tools the bike might require.

On the upside, they are easy to re-sell, comfy, and women love them.

Yes, they do retain their value. I bought a 2001, mint condition with only a little over 5,000 miles on it. The same used bike at a dealership would have cost me an additional $2,000. $350 for an oil change, that's insane!

Fortunately I can do my own maintenance. I need to get the shop manual. I already have a motorcycle jack to lift it up.

You're not kidding about the female attraction factor. I notice that just talking about it gets women all hot & bothered.

I tried with Harley, and I really wanted to buy an American motorcycle, but the prices are just out of control, and I was warned by actual Harley owners to stay away. Crazy. So I now have a VStar. It's fun, it was at a great price (brand new), and it's fuel injected. Rides great and the way I see it is that riding is riding. The bike is whatever you can afford/like.

For what it's worth, Sonny Barger, the founder of Hell Angels, said that he only rides a Harley because it's one of the rules of being in a motorcycle gang and that in terms of workmanship, they are basically crap. If even Hells Angels don't like Harley, it really does say something about those bikes.
