I like Helsing. Something about that vampire...it's funny, twisted and often brutal.

I forgot about Robotech. Yeah that was a pioneer. I never heard of Star Blazers. What about Speed Racer? My dad used to watch that when he was a kid.

Akira was one movie and it I don't think it was aired on TV so I don't know how big it's impact was. Any more data about the 2nd wave?

As for "bowlderdized" anime, that has happened to a great many of shows. Heck even Sailormoon which is technically a girls show got censored. The final season, Sailor Stars was never aired because some executives thought it was too "adult orientated" be be shown on day time TV.

What funny is that I think it's great that more and more anime is being shown on American TV and that it's getting more exposure. But the thing is, for the past 5 years or so 99.9% of the anime I watch is fansubbed, that I downloaded.

Speaking of fansubbed and Macross in the previous post, anybody check out "Macross Frontier"? So far only one episode is out and the next one isn't due out till April.
The thing about Speed Racer is that back then no one thought to wonder if it was Japanese or American because of the character designs. That fact escaped just about everyone and it was easy to hide it. It wasn't till the 80s with Robotech that people started to realize that these were Japanese cartoons and that the Japanese take animation a lot more seriously than North America had. And of course, in bowlderdized anime, it was always their way to change the names of people and places so that it took place in the U.S., except I think the dubbed Sailor Moon took place in Paris (Tokyo Tower resembles Eiffel Tower).

If you remember The First Wave after Robotech and Star Blazers, you might recall that almost all of the anime we watched on video was fuzzy bootlegs of stuff in raw, untranslated Japanese. Anything available commercially was usually rentals of Force Five or Voltron. We've come a long way since then. Well, that and whatever Robotech eps. we were lucky to tape off TV.

I'd say that the second wave was the Streamline Pictures(Carl Macek post Robotech) era when you had a whole lot of dubbed anime coming out. Streamline was the first company to distribute Akira. Some of the other second wave stuff was Vampire Hunter D, Robot Carnival, Neo Tokyo, Lensman, Dirty Pair, Doomed Megalopolis. There was anime in stores for sale and rental but you really had to look for it and go in knowing what you were looking for. They were often just shelved with the other "cartoons" by storeowners who didn't recognize anime. Not much anime on TV during this time.I do remember anime on SciFi Channel back in the early 90s but it was usually a one shot thing. This era also had U.S. Manga Corps who distributed Project A-Ko, Gall Force, and Bubble Gum Crisis. And then you had Animeigo who was almost exclusively mail order and only dealt in subtitled anime.

Apparently since I got back online, all of the DBZ movies and episodes on that one site thatI found have been removed because of infringement.

Damn, that was a great site too. At least, I got to see all of the movies and ALOT of the episodes. Now I just got to watch the last couple of sagas and buy "Wrath of the Dragon"

There's a torrent out there that has every single dubbed episode out there and another that has every single DBZ movie. You can get other animes too, I just downloaded the first season of Monster Rancher for memories sake.
