I do agree that values and expectations change with culture. It makes sense that since the marriage age of women has increased, that they will have more sex partners. But there's a difference between sleeping with a few boyfriends, and maybe some other guys to experiment, compared to going out to the club every week and screwing some new random guy every Saturday night.Lexington said:The point is that people are using a set of cultural and moral assumptions that came about as an adaptation to a different set of circumstances. The circumstances have changed, so naturally it follows that our morality and expectations should also change.
I would say that the majority of people do not hold strong morals or values, so they naturally blow around more easily on the winds of cutural change and technologies.
However, having grown up during the sexual revolution, I'd say it was not so much a case of the older people abandoning or changing their values, it was more the younger people were coming up with their own agenda. That's where the generation gap came from, partly.
I never said none of my LTRs cheated on me. It's possible my high school girlfriend did, I don't really know. But I was pretty young then, and it hasn't been a recurring problem with me. You can never know for sure, of course, but I'm pretty certain that neither my ex-wife or girlfriend cheated. I lived with both of them, knew their personalities as well as their comings and goings, and I believe it is highly unlikely. I picked them not only because of their faithful nature, but because of their high interest in me.Die Hard said:I'm glad none of your LTR's cheated on you (if that is true at all, I must add...)
I know if you are the type to cheat, or don't value commitment, it's probably difficult to believe that there are girls out there who think differently. But they're out there, even Lex admits that.
I gave you the example I was thinking of when I wrote my original statement. Sorry it wasn't what you were looking for.Die Hard said:You're taking my statements extremely out of context. I'm not advocating anarchy and my statements are certainly not meant towards every possible human interaction that takes place in society...
And Zekko, I'm STILL waiting for an example. Are you ever gonna give it?
I do think we're having two different conversations though. I'm thinking of defending morality on very broad terms, whereas you seem to be talking about something more specific, although this was not initially clear to me.
