I was watching American Idol last night (yeah, yeah, I know) and there was a guy on there, didn't sing particularly well, but wasn't horrible awful like some of the joke contestants either. Anyway, here's the point:

The two female judges told him that he was too confident. Kara DiGuardia told him that he was a guy who would benefit from being less confident, that he came across as ****y, and described his entrance as a "strut". Victoria Beckham told him that he made her itchy because he was too confident.

Now I didn't really notice if he was overly confident or not, he just seemed like another audition to me. But the point is, I thought women liked confident, ****y guys. Why did this guy get such a negative reaction. Part of his backstory was he was a football player (in college I think it was), a long snapper. Maybe the girls saw this and expected a football player to be ****y? Maybe they had some boyfriend trouble with a jock at one time and took it out on this guy? Could they have actually liked his confidence but said they didn't (they all voted no on him)?

All you see on this forum (and other dating sites) is confidence, confidence, confidence. Yet these women seemed to react negatively to it. What's going on here?

Not to be obvious, but you're taking one guy on a TV show and trying to draw a relation to ALL women.

Okay, this one guy on TV was deemed "too confident" by women...on TV.

In life, you'll find that some women will not like your confidence. It doesn't matter, because MOST will. Confidence is not a negative thing. Just because 1 out of every 10 women you meet don't like your confidence doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Some people will be intimidated. Some girls just want a weak man to do their bidding. But evolution, history, genetics...whatever you want to call it....favors a confident man.

I think the problem with the guy on Idol was that he was not just confident, but ****y. I think there is a difference between the two.

Okay, but what about all the suggestions to use ****y/funny lines to tease women? I know it's important to throw the funny in there, but there's a definite implication that women are attracted to men that are ****y.

its not so much the '****y" that the women are attracted to, IMO. its the fact that there is a confusion on your intentions. it draws a mystery to what your expectations are to an extent.

and i didnt see this american idol guy, but i can almost gaurantee that it was him being "****y", IMO, that is what "too confident" simply means.

Women say lots of things which are contradictory- I think that those two women were getting a little 'gina tingle from that guy and were uncomfortable about their emotional reactions to someone who they were "judging ".
Denial is a curious thing.

I was watching it last night too.

The football player was god awful and creepy. He couldn't sing.

If he acted normal and had a good voice the judges would have liked him. You're giving him way too much credit. Too much confidence wasn't his problem.

Anyone who watched the show last night would know the guy was a clown.

Funny you responded, Jophil. I was thinking of you when I wrote the original post, since you seem to put out an intentionally ****y vibe.
Your theory is possible. I still think maybe they had a bad run in with a football player when they were in school, so they took it out on this guy. I still think women will (generally) respond well to being ****y. That's why they're attracted to jerks after all, right?

I agree he wasn't a very good singer. What I found strange was why they started dumping on him for being confident. And note, it was only the girls who were talking about him being too confident, not the guys. I didn't notice it, and apparently neither did the male judges. Women must have a radar for that sort of thing.

Interesting...

Their objections to his 'excessive confidence' is indeed mysterious - why did they take exception to his 'strut' when they were there to evaluate his singing skills.

Perhaps it was one of these situations -- A woman in a bar declares a dislike for "that jerk/playa over there" ( referring to the confident guy in the corner chatting up three women all of whom are bug-eyed)
Strangely, that same woman who vowed her revulsion for "that jerk" is often seen chatting to him and even dancing with him later in the evening.

Because there are no rules. Look around you. Every kind of guy gets women. Nerds, jerks, closet homo's, beautiful men, ugly men, fat men, thin men, long men, short men...everybody. One girl likes an inconfident boy and talks about him likes he's the man. Another girl is disgusted by this wimp and only spreads her legs for guys like Arnold Schwarznegger. That's life.
