hi all
i've been taking fish oil for about 2 weeks now
for the first 1.5 weeks i was on about 4-6g of fish oil without incident

then in the last few days i upped it to about 30g
now i have a mouth ulcer on my gum that's been developing and hurting like crazy with a little redness (perhaps some bleeding)

i read that too much fish oil makes you bleed or something?

could this be just a coincidence?

thanks

I've done up to 45g in a day without any trouble. however I never jumped from 5 to 30. cut your dose in half and build up again, and see what happens

by doing what? high dose fish oil? no, and it might be purely coincidental anyway.

ps - on this note, and I don't mean you, I love how people get 'concerned' over protein powder and fish oil and try to research it to death to make sure it won't harm them, but will gladly put down pizza, cereal, milk all day.. lol

You are going to get two sides to this opinion. Mine which is I wouldn't suggest 45g. And then as you can see Warbosses which is to take 45g. He likes Poliquins info on supps and i'm not a huge fan of it.

See, we vary on our opinions on fish oil and on our opinions on protein. I'm sure he wouldn't argue on creatine because we both know it works and that around 5g per day is sufficient and then 1g or so after. This is all proof that the body can uptake only so much and there is no argument over creatine anymore. Not only that you can see the same proof with the leading research and companies on creatine.

Fish oil and Protein though.... There is no..SOLID anything, like creatine and you have to go by what you hear or read or study. There is more on protein than there is on fish, but I dont discuss protein anymore on here.

I personally take 2-3g per day and no more of fish oil. This is me. I dont take 45g for a reason.

Warboss... The pizza analogy is a little FISHY :D

Eating pizza is less of a concern than blood problems with megadoses of fish oil, or megadoses of anything without knowing what is going on in the body. Personal opinion is that megadoses of ANY supplement should be supervised under the care of a physician, and with tests. Some things can be ok for certain times, and others can cause major problems for some people. This is why I dont megadose anything supplement related. What megadose may not harm one person could cause major problems for others. Happens with Vitamin C.

Anyway onthepath, I am here to provide my advice and expertise on certain things, and then after that, I will usually say no more. I'm not here to babysit people or spoon feed people to death when there are opinions to both sides of something.

I give mine, and others give theirs. I could care less who takes whose opinion, and who chooses to follow whose advice. And on certain subjects and topics, you have to do just that.

I know, it sucks, but sometimes there is no choice. I have my reasons for what I state and others have theirs.

Poliquin recommends UP TO 45g, I personally do 20-30. Just setting the record straight. :)

sounds like a coincidence (i can't imagine a mechanism that would produce that outcome), but as with all supplements, start with a low dose and crank it up gently.

personally i've been taking in the neighborhood of 9-15g/fish oil/day, but i'm also eating lots of fish (3-5x per week) and eating exclusively 660mg omega-3 eggs.

im really confused about the dosage of fish oil. I take these big a$$ capsules of fish oil twice a day like the bottle recommends...according to the info on the back, one capsule = 0.5 g. So if i was to even get 3 g of fish oil like recommended here...i would have to triple the suggested dosage on the back, and be taking 6 Big capsules a day :O

Most should be around 1g per capsule and contain and 18:12 ratio of EPA/DHA

If its 500mg per softgel, get some new ones.

I have 100 softgels at what I listed above and I spend about $3.25 for each bottle.

There are mental benefits I see when I take 4-6 grams at a time (alertness, no sleepyness). This is at a time, not for the whole day. At 20 grams a day chronic dryness in my right hand improved a lot.

Omen, if your recommendations for fish oil are primary research based, you need to update your research. Many trials found benefits of fish oil dosages much higher than 3 grams.

Try searching: fish oil, 'x g' or 'x grams', where x is the grams of fish oil.

I would rather recommend you playing around with dosages and seeing the affects for yourself. Why wait for a study to tell you whats the optimum dosage when you can figure it out for yourself.

i'm thinking (or rather really really hoping) that its a coincidence
i've been noticing some great benefits with the megadose of fish oil such as less muscle soreness and rapid weight loss (when i was pre-megadose i was losing 2 pounds in 2 weeks if i was lucky. yesterday i measured a 2 pound loss in 2 days  not sure if that's just a coincdence, or maybe i just crapped out a lot of weight ;) )

at anyrate, i'm just going to get something to treat the mouth ulcer and take it from there

such weight loss is insignificant in the sense that most guys of any significant size can swing as much as 10 lbs or more in a 24 hour period given eating habits, water retention, etc. that's why you'll see advice here to weigh yourself once a month (or as often as once a week), unclothed first thing in the morning (after emptying the bladder, etc.)

I guess I could understand the pizza pat (although it seems perfectly fine for me position), perhaps I have once again been brainwashed by the mass media in to actually thinking cereal was good for you. Why is it bad? (for most people here)

Pizza on whole wheat crust with lots of veggies and whole non perserved meat isn't as bad (depends on the individual though). Its not bad for me. I think

Most food that is refined/processed are bad, esp of the carbohydrate kind. They go to proccessed like extrusion that destroy a lot of the nutrients and refine the grains (making them less 'complex' and more 'simple'). A lot of the nutrients in cereal are supplemented, which means they aren't as effective as nutrients from real food.

I heard that if you mash up cereal, put it in water and put a magnet in water, you'll pull out metal shavings. Thats the supplemental iron they put in there.

I think cereals are pretty much white bread and fiber/vitamen pills combined.

cereal is sh!te, processed grains are the root of many of the world's health problems. I'd rather you ate pizza than cereal
