Michael Douglas' ex-wife says she went after a bigger piece of his fortune only because fraudsters Bernie Madoff and Kenneth Starr stole hers.
Diandra Douglas -- who got a reported $45 million in her 2000 divorce from the Oscar-winning actor -- says her bank account took a bruising after she invested in Madoff's Ponzi scheme through a feeder fund, and because she'd used client-swindler Starr as her business manager.
"Because of the type of human being I aspire to be, if Starr & Company hadn't happened and Madoff hadn't, and if a lot of other things hadn't happened, to tell you the honest truth, I really believe I would have walked away," Diandra told the new issue of Harper's Bazaar.
Diandra -- who has remarried, divorced, had two kids by a surrogate and adopted another since splitting with Douglas -- also said she didn't know the actor was sick with throat cancer when she made her run for more of his cash.
She filed court papers in New York last June, claiming she was entitled to part of his earnings for last year's "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps."
"Michael didn't know he was ill, I didn't know he was ill, and the gods didn't know he was ill," Diandra told the mag.
"I am not into going after sick people for things that don't belong to me."
In December, a Manhattan judge tossed Diandra's claim, saying any battle should be waged in California.
"I am not a greedy person by nature,"Diandra insisted.
She also said she called to tell her ex that she was "terribly sorry he was ill," but he hung up on her.
One of Michael's lawyers told the magazine that the actor doesn't recall the hang-up, but noted, "He might have addressed her in an abrupt manner."
Douglas' camp added that he limits his contact with Diandra to issues having to do with their son, Cameron.
Now, with Douglas' cancer in remission, Diandra says she's going forward with her claim.
"One cannot live one's life based on the court of public opinion," she said.
She has been shopping for lawyers to pursue the case in California, where she still owns the sprawling Santa Barbara estate Douglas gave her in their split.
