About 4 months ago in school, I had the oppurtunity to see a master trumpet player give a speech about his trumpet playing and how he got so good. One thing he mentioned that got to my attention was a very interesting idea of how to reach a level of success in whatever it is you do. He said that the way he gets good at playing, is he pictures a man not of this world who is better then anyone who has ever lived on earth. He doesn't look up to Miles Davis for his inspiration but to someone or something who is 40 times better than Miles. He tries as hard as he can to capture what a being would be like, how he would play with those superhuman abilities and then he proceeds to practice. What this does, is it takes away any boundaries you have pertaining to whether you can be that good or not. To be the best at something don't try to compete with the best, this will only lead to you being able to be as good as the best or worse than the best. Try to compete with someone who is better than the best, try to compete with an alien who is far more advanced than us humans. If you do this you'll expand your boundaries of thought which is what is really needed in all of our situations as human beings.

Kinda wierd... try to compete, without really competing, and with someone who is just in your head?
I'm sorry, but i do not understand this. Please explain.

I like this idea.

Titus:
He's saying to compete with somebody who is far too good to exist, instead of somebody who really does exist. This way, you wont settle when you think you've done well enough, and you'll never stop improving. It removes the limit from your skill.

The more I think about this, the more I like it!

It's a way to remove any boundaries of self doubt you may have. But remember it's not purely based off of your imaginary superbeing. With trumpet playing, of course he got ideas from some of the greats and he learned how to play from a teacher, but once he knew these advanced techniques instead of trying to compete with the best known, he decided to compete with something far better. Remember the universe is infinite and I presume so are our minds. He widened the gap of his abilities, the gap of his creativity and increased his boundaries of thought purely through making an image which was believable enough and good enough. Think of playing a sport with someone who sucks, at the end of playing your ability doesn't really increase much. Now think of when you play with someone really good, this is when you gain. This same idea is applied to this technique. As long as you have a direction, in order to expand that direction further than whoever is the best you must use individual creative energy, you must come up with something better the than the best. A good way to do this is to think of an oustide being who is much better and then compete with that being. The reason to do this again, is many people can't comprehend the fact that they can be better, that they can come up with something better than the best. When you imagine some out of this world alien being better, even though in reality you are the one coming up with these ideas, you can believe in these ideas far more than you can believe in your own ideas becuase your are now viewing your own ideas in another instead of trying to look at yourself which has the foggy mirror effect. I feel this is a good way to increase your creativity because you are not pushing and moving along with your creative boundaries, which is very clouded and takes a lot of bravery to do so, you are increasing that boundary ten fold in your mind and now you just have to learn how to utilize it in the physical.
