when you say that during a bulking phase one should sleep at least 8 hours, what do you exactly mean?
Does the time from when I go to bed to when I fall asleep count aswell? Or you mean 8 hours of actual sleep?

I find it hard enough to get 7 hours.

I don't. I'm usually wide awake by 6 or 7.. and sometimes my body wants like 10. In high school, i routinely slept 4 and i never felt tired. I just let my body decide how long to sleep for the most part. I'm not gonna force myself to sleep just to reach some magical 8 hours (nor can i usually). I feel sluggish if i keep going back to sleep after waking up with my body being like "well get up i'm done!"

It is annoying when my body wants 10 but i can only give it 7 that night, but that's the breaks. It's hard to tell before you go to bed.

I don't think it matters that much as long as you're getting what your body is asking for as far as lifting goes.

but i don't know much. just giving a not too educated opinion.

You have to give your body all the sleep it needs, that means if you got school or work to go to at 8, and u need to wake up at 6 to get everything done and be on time,
go to sleep at 9pm the night before and see when u wake up.

Some good ways to improve sleep; insulate your house, it sux when people do stuff at 4 am, or maybe you live near traintracks *can be heard for quite a distance* or a highway, or even a bus route you will hear them while u sleep and this reduces your sleep quality.
Make sure your window blinds are perfectly sealing the window and making it really dark even at full sun.

thats great if u honestly, honestly get enough sleep from 4 hours, i am VERY happy for you. But when your body wants 10 and u give it 7 (not sure how u know exactly how much your body needs  ) then you are depriving yourself, I'm sure it would appreciate more than 4 hours on average.

In sleep we grow, we heal, we figure out problems.
It IS very important.

i am 5"6, 7" inches because i think i didn;t sleep much when i was 13-18 all i do is stay up all night playing SNES or PLAYSTATION then PC.

so from 13-18 i grew about 1 inch. thats is what i call STUNTED GROWTH from 4-5 hours sleep a day, i usualy take Vitamins C when i feel tired and it always gives me a kick.

yeh i now have bad sleeping habits and insomnia somenights even if i wanted to sleep.

Sleep is super important i reckon for functions of the body and a perfect example is a 70 year old guy from my work that is same height weight as me and is stronger then me because since 16 year old he went to army and ever since he always go to bed around 8-9 pm and wake up around 5-6 am and do a lil run before breakfast then going to work alot more engergy then me.

unbelieable, its hard in this generation due to TV, games, etc keepign you up all night especially TV. switch all of it off and slowly you should find a better life :) read papers or listen to radio for ur info instead of TV, tv only good for news, study same with computer.

peace out i am babbling on so much **** already :)

That might be true, it's not THAT big of an issue, but your body is weaker and less efficient with less than adequate sleep.

If you're trying to bulk up, sleep is the main time your body gets on that.

If you don't sleep 8 hours a night, you're not going to have as significant progress.

It's hard and it takes discipline to get the necessary amount of sleep. But you know that your body repairs itself the most during sleep.

I always aim for 8 hours of sleep, but with school and everything, I sometimes only get 6-7, like last night, when I only got 6. However, on days like these, I try to at least get a solid nap in for an hour or so.

In fact, I ALWAYS try to get a nap in, even if I get 8 hours of sleep, even if it is only 30 minutes.

Bulking up takes a lot of hard discipline. You have to eat right, sleep right, and have time for working out. And of course most of us have busy work and school schedules as well. However, if you really want it, you WILL do it. You will sacrifice late night outings because you know you need your sleep for your muscles to repair.

But in the end, you feel better because of it. Missing a couple late night outings is not a big deal...maybe go out once a week instead of 2 or 3. In the end, you will have succeeded and achieved your goal, something that a lot of guys wish for but seldom do.

it could be just me but a sleep cycle is usually 90-110 minutes, i find naps to only confuse my sense of time and if im already underslept i get sleepy from such a short nap.
