Hi all

Due to excessive partying and simply not interested in studying, I 'wasted' 3-4 years. I'm currently in a situation where I have a diploma, but I want to go for another one, as simply put it would make a lot more money. It's an extension of what I have studied so I do am interested in it, but the main reason is the money.

But I want to take a year of, I want to have a trip to some foreign country and stay there for a few months and then when I'm back start studying. It's something I've always wanted to do and I feel like it's now or never.

Now I'm wondering, how is this conceived? I mean, if I graduate at 29, most other people are already working, having a decent income,... My life will just be starting then...

I'm basically torn if I should take another year of because I already thrown away a couple, or I should study further...

Take a year off, have fun, get it out of your system.

Who cares if you don't have a house at 29? Live your life while you still can. Work and school will always be here, youth won't be.

I wouldn't worry about the age thing - I'd just be a little concerned about having so much debt. If you can avoid that then no problem..

Well while I'm not in the exact same situation as you, the year off to go travelling idea is right up my street.

I start my final year of uni in September, and after that it's either continue education (Masters), get a job, or travel. The way I see it, I want to see as much of this planet as I can, before I get my life crippled by a steady job/career. There's only so much travelling you can do with holiday time.

I want to meet people and experience what the world has to offer anyway before I jump into a career. Simple really.

Hell I might even do the year of travelling and then do a Masters if I can afford it.

Basically what I'm saying is go for it. You'll damn well regret if you don't. Don't go living a life of regrets now.

North America, probably an airport
I didn't go to university until after I was left the Navy/Marine Corp and that was after serving in Viet Nam.

Your experience could not be more weird than mine was. And I did fine both in school and especially with women even though people didn't care much for veterans in those days.

Relax.

It's not now or never for traveling. It never is. "Some foreign country" will be there in 4 years. You might even have more money to enjoy it.

It may be now or never for school. Another way to stall for time for a year will become another way to stall for time for 2 years...3 years...and so on. Even your goal reeks of impulse. "Some foreign country" not a place you've always wanted to visit or somewhere that you know you would get a greater understanding by visiting. Nope, just "some foreign country."

Now is as good a time as any. I know alot of guys who were in your spot and now are a little further down the road. Most of them would go back to college, or trade school, or work that job with a future if they could go back. Not traveling is a regret that is easily handled with vacation time or simply looking on a job website for jobs in another country. Not getting your degree is a much harder regret to get over.

OP, you're in a unique situation. Right now it seems you don't have anything else really holding you back....other than school. A lot can change in four years, kid, girlfriend, wife, career ready to be launched.

People always say they want to do something but never get around to doing it. Mostly because of some type of anchor keeping them in place.... then later they regret not taking the opportunity when they had the chance.

I'd say go for it. Live....
