Not an artist but it looks to be much of the shading on the right figure, for example the extra dark shading down the side of her face that is responsible for the change. Those close up details that define the expression on the left face become less visible at a distance where shading factors take over

ah, that's something about your eyes focus. An easier way to do the trick would be to put one of your fingers close to your eyes, and focus on it. Then look to the picture while keeping your eyes focused on your finger.

There are people who use this as an excuse. Ya know when girls in moves talk about the 'lighting' makes them look bad? Or it's all about the lights when you are a runway photgrapher. This is true. Slight shading makes a huge difference with this picture. Pretty cool imo, I wonder if there are more of these around.
