Just wondering if buying a set of free weights would be a good substitute for going to the gym as you can work on all muscles with free weights anyway!!

one more question!! does anyone know how much alcohol effects getting big? because my life is filled with parties at the moment and usually get drunk about twice a week!! thanks in advance

IF YOU CAN BUY THE WHOLE HOME GYM SETUP (RACK, BENCH, DIP/PULLDOWN STUFF, BARBELLS, DUMBBELLS PLUS LOTS OF WEIGHTS) THEN IT'S FINE OTHERWISE GO TO THE GYM

THIS ISN'T WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR BUT YOU ARE NOT READY FOR WORKING OUT SERIOUSLY AT THIS TIME OF YOUR LIFE. GETTING BIG REQUIRES MONTHS OF DEDICATION AND YOUR GETTING WASTED TWICE A WEEK JUST UNDOS ALL THE HARD WORK YOU PUT IN. YOU'D BE SPINNING YOUR WHEELS.. DON'T WASTE TIME. EITHER PARTY HARD OR WORK OUT HARD, YOUR CHOICE

A power rack, bench, barbell, adjustable dumbbells, and a whack load of plates is all you'll need for a decent home setup. Unless you're willing to fork out nearly a thousand bucks for the stuff than stick with the gym. Although in the long run it will be cheaper than paying gym dues.

Alcohol is definately not good for gains. Like warboss said, unless you're willing to dedicate yourself than why even bother. Alcohol = Empty calories, estrogen, and catabolism.

well maybe if i cut down on the partying then i'll get some progress. i cannot stop it all togther as its just my lifestyle at the minute...

regardless im going to continue with the weights to get as buff as possible!! i understand that it is not good due to several factors but im not aiming for a bodybuilders physique, just trying to get as big as possible!!

I say again, you have counterproductive goals: you say partying is your lifestyle and yet you also want to get as big as possible (which is, by the way, what bodybuilders want as well, or usually anyway). Having a little fitness while partying is possible but putting on quality muscle, especially in the quantity you say you want, will just not work.

By all means go to parties and socialise, but take a couple of protein bars or even a shake with you; dance and flirt and stuff but don't touch any alcohol.

I hate to be patronising but you have no idea what 'getting as big as possible' entails.. you think it's just the three or four times a week you'll work out? No, that's only part of the picture. If you want a truly impressive, muscular physique then you have to work for it, and not just with the weights: 5-8 meals a day, eaten day in day out come what may.

What seperates the wannabes from the true big guys (genetics and drugs aside) is the time they put in at the dinner plate and what they do for recovery (sleep, active recovery, hot/cold showers etc) - sleep being the most important, and quality sleep at that. And by quality sleep I mean 7-9 hours a night, and this doesn't mean staying out all night and sleeping from 7am til two in the afternoon.

You're welcome to try it bro, and good luck to you. I just think you'd be wasting your time.

well obviously im not going to turn into a batista with my lifestyle, but ill be able to keep well toned and hopefully gain a good few pounds... ive been doing my research and its a unaminous belief that its bad for high gains, but i think if i drink and party in moderation, which i can't avoid as its too much fun, combined with lots of water, sleep and all the other ingredients needed to bulk up then i should make considerable progress.. my older brother did it that way and gained considerable weight

I never wish ill on someone who wants to try their luck with the iron, so I wish you all the best.

At least keep a journal so we can ensure your diet and training routine is okay. Being accountable is a good way to stay disciplined. :)

No offense, but why even ask for people's opinions when you're obviously not going to take them into consideration? It seems that you already have your mind made up as to what you're going to do - I second the idea that you should start a journal.

As for being able to party hard and work out regularly, I'm a prime example as to why it can't work. I've been taking "Party Pix" at bars for some time now, and while I've had a great time doing it I haven't been able to make any significant progress in my phsyique no matter how hard I tried. Whether it was from the drinking, or the late nights, or being around so much smoke in the air, or whatever - end result is I didn't accomplish jack, which is exactly what you'll be doing. Just out of curiosity, how do you plan on getting "lots of sleep" when you're out until 3am and have to wake up for your job/classes the next morning? It'll take your body days to recover from your night out, and then as soon as you're feeling well enough you're going to go out and do it over again, thus repeating the cycle.
