Imagine you get a dog...
Dogs are pack animals, they supplicate to authority. It's not enough to just feed it and put down a bowl of water, you have to show the dog you're in control. If you don't, the dog will control you. So you have to learn how to control the dog, or the dog will end up controlling you.

Now apply the same wisdom to other pack animals like humans.
