Personally I dislike cold, so I improve my mind and spirit improve from hot, steamy showers. Unless it's summer in which case a cold shower is refreshing. So I think the general answer is that each person is different? Not a very sexy answer.

What most people don't get is you can follow a protocol where a cold shower does not feel bad at all. The only thing is that it takes a bit of time.

Btw. the first rule of cold plunges is you always have to talk about it.

Another tip I have heard and tried for gaining cognitive function first thing in the morning is to brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand first thing. It was probably an Andrew Huberman vid where it was mentioned.

I'll be honest, cold showers in the winter are not it for me.

If I can wear shorts outside in the morning, I'm doing cold showers though.

Yeah I keep my home quite cold, I don't even turn on the heat all winter. So a cold shower in the winter is brutal. Even in the summer I won't take them in the morning though, because I put the AC at 60. But they are otherwise great on hot summer days or as a mid afternoon pick me up.

They're also really nice after a sauna. In fact, sometimes I end up staying in a sauna for 45-60m by taking a quick cold shower, getting back in, then rinse repeat a few times. You get a lot of benefit by exposing yourself to both extremes and there are specific data showing it's more effective to alternate hot-cold like that.
