200k in middle america is very different. If you wanted to live in the nicer areas in NYC, on 200k you would absolutely be on a tight budget if you could even afford it at all.

200k living in a average neighborhood in NYC in my opinion is not upper class. Don't really care of the distribution numbers.
You are just wrong on this. $200K is top 10%. The median income in Short Hills, NJ is $220K. If you think that is middle class I don’t know what to tell you.

I do not care about percentage of the population, I am going by what you can afford and what lifestyle you can live along and net worth.

If it makes you feel better that you can group yourself in, have at it lol

You get hung up on some real strange stances.
Says the guy arguing $200K is middle class.

What net worth do you think classifies upper class?
There is no set net worth number. Some people live their whole life on credit and have $0 in the bank. I can tell you anyone who lives in Short Hills, NJ is certainly not middle class.

I outlined it in the post above; if the kids are in private school, they all have passports and have been out of the country, there are a pair of luxury cars in the driveway of a cul-de-sac, the food in the fridge is all “organic,” and there is a country club nearby…

I am going by what is. $200K is not middle class.
Here ya go

The income in the top 10% in the state of New York is $291,906. However, New York City is considerably wealthier, with the top 20% earning an average of $295,662. Meanwhile, the top 5% earn $585,902. Thus, the top 10% earn somewhere in between the two, with the average being around $440,000.

If you aren't in top 20%, you arent uppper class bud. sorry dude, you are lower middle class in nyc

These numbers look substantially inflated. I go by the 2020 census.

I have a coworker that lives in Fort Greene Brooklyn, he’s higher level than me so close to 200K. Pays over $5K a month rent. He’s not rich but not hurting. No one is forcing him to live there though…
Right, so middle class in NYC. It is not a bad thing or an insult

I agree it is not an insult. I just don’t know anyone associating Fort Greene with middle class either.
Personal opinion is middle class you can live comfortably in decent area, save some for retirement, do some entertainment/vacations. You just can not afford the high end luxury areas, vacations, cars, homes all the time while being financially responsible and save at the same time.

We getting off topic here arguing about middle and upper class.

Also, if you haven’t experienced what having a lot of money is like to the point of it being irrelevant in life, don’t think your opinion matters for much. If you feeling like you’re upper middle class or someone else is upper class makes you feel better, than all the power to you.

Respectfully, I disagree. The thread is at what point does money become irrelevant. To someone who doesn’t care about luxury cars and expensive watches, their number is a lot lower than someone who does.

Respectfully, your opinion carries no weight since money is relevant to your life but feel free to share.
