Root Canal Therapy--Pain 5 months later

Had a Root canal done on my bottom right (2nd to back) molar in Mid-September.

I felt great for 4.5 months and then all of a sudden while eating Pizza yesterday that same tooth started to hurt. I did the Q-tip test (bit down on it) and it's definitely that tooth and it hurts if I eat on that side.

I thought when you had a root canal the tooth is dead. WTF?

Only thing I can think of is that it was a failed root canal and starting to flare up again? I think I read failed root canals can re-appear months and years later (not right away)

Any thoughts?

I don't think its the gums because when I tap the top of the tooth it hurts

Molars have more than one nerve root and at least one’s not completely gone yet. It’s possible dentist didn’t file it out completely, but xrays usually confirm canal success. If it’s the same tooth, and its not an exterior below gum/jawbone infection as mentioned above, have him make it right n/c…
