Running in the cold

For those of you who run outside how the heck do you do it in the cold ? Maybe im not built for the cold but have been trying to get outside and do some runs.
When it is below 40 I dry my throat out and develop a wheez in my chest. The skin on my face also feels like it’s on fire when I break a sweat in cold temps. I can legit run all day when it’s warm... usually average a 7 and a half to 8 minute pace.. cold weather I legit can’t breath.

Even at 15 degrees I just warm up after running for a few minutes. Just gotta make sure my ears are covered and I'm good to go. If it's sunny and no wind I will even end up in just a T-shirt. I grew up in a very warm climate but just adapted naturally to the cold. Anything over 68 is too warm for exercise for me. (where I grew up it often goes over 110).

I started ice bathing though, I think it kinda sucks so much that suddenly not being in ice water feels pretty warm overall.

How far are you trying to run? Lately it's around 10-20 degrees when I run, and I'm only in a tshirt and sweatpants, but I only run 1 mile to my gym and back. I will also say the run back is considerably easier after I finish my workout and have been heated up. I would say do some exercises beforehand to warm up.

Your body stays very warm even in cold conditions so long as you are continually running. If it is below 30 degrees (Fahrenheit), just make sure you protect your junk, hands, and ears adequately. You don't need frostbite in bad spots and those typically are the most susceptible.

If it is below 20 degrees and there is windchill, you will want to bundle up a bit more (under armor is great). But so long as you keep moving the whole time you will be surprised at how warm your body will stay. I typically will always run outside and avoid a stationary bike if I can for my aerobic exercise unless it is below 10 degrees.

I quit running in the cold. The breathing is too laborious with asthma. If breathing isn’t an issue for you there should be no problem. I
I am right there with you... tried it a few more times since my first post and takes me out of commission... raspy wheezing for days after. Will stick to treadmill and running up and down my steps with a weighted vest during the bitter cold

My main issue with running in the cold is a strong fear of slipping and getting injured. A friend in undergrad really screwed up his knee when he slipped on a patch of ice.

I run over ice all the time, I've slipped and fell a few times, it was fine. Your friend sounds like he doesn't know how to fall, especially surprising if he's that young. Probably doesn't squat or deadlift.

Ice has stopped me from running in the cold. As you get older, you have to be more careful about potentially breaking a bone. Choose your steps more carefully.
