By the definition of "remote areas," I mean the under-developed and poor cities and provinces opposed to shiny, expensive, and well-developed big metropolises such as Beijing or Shanghai, where everything - from infrastructures, income, to cost of living - is way higher and even comparable to many economic hubs in the Western world such as London or New York.

So, as opposed to Shanghai or Beijing, where people are much more used to seeing white people, these tourists might never have seen a real "laowai" (chinese slang for foreigners, especially western white ones) before, so when they see one, of course they'd act all curious like you have witnessed in this video.

These people, therefore, are always considered and perceived as not having a high education level and income, given the way they act around white foreigners.
