What's your opinion on wifing up a chick with a lot of student debt?

I was reading this, and it got me interested:
... Andretta's student-debt load, [is] at $163,000.
All of Andretta's debt comes from the Ph.D. she sought from Teachers College at Columbia University in 1999.
my opinion: Her SMV is far too low to BetaMax by helping her pay down the debt.

Statistically I've heard a lot of the people with the highest student debt are the people with real careers like Doctors, Lawyers, Nurses, Engineers, Computer Scientists, etc. Although most of those are male dominated fields.

It takes a particularly stupid (or spoiled by daddy's money) person to go to some crazy expensive hard to get into private school for an obscure liberal arts degree. Instead of getting it at a state/city school for $6k/year.

On the subject of wifing a girl up, if you get that far into the relationship you're far beyond caring about things like her debts. Whether because she's your perfect unicorn or because you're so pvssy-whipped you'd be too blind to reason anyway.

everything else is perfect, and she can manage personal money and doesn't have credit card debt only student loans.

would not care, that is a tiny thing compared to all the other crappy things that a woman can be.

the girl in this article has other issues also, so no for her but for the otherwise perfect one, it's no big deal.

What I see is a person that voted for a free pass on their debts, and couldn't care less about anything else! Skank.

It doesn't matter how good-looking you are, how romantic you are, how funny you are... or anything else. If she doesn't have something INVESTED in you and the relationship, preferably quite a LOT invested, she'll dump you, without even the slightest hesitation, as soon as someone a little more "interesting" comes along.

I know how those that voted for relief from their college debts would feel if those that didn't have any debt would be granted an equal amount in a stimulus check.

What's a stimulus check? Self employed single white Male, I had to ask Siri how to spell stimulus .

I find it even more egregious that people expect their student loan debt that they incurred to be forgiven. No one forgave my student loan debt. I had the GI Bill plus I took courses at night and worked during the day to get through college. They made their decision, they need to live (or die) with it. College has become too expensive due to the government wanting everyone to get a college education. This guarantee should be removed and you will see how fast college fees come down to Earth.

These free hand-outs for stupid decisions need to stop!

Good video to watch -

From the standpoint of whether or not you should "wife" a woman up who has student loan debt, or any debt for that matter, I guess I don't see why it matters. That is pretty far down the list of issues with a woman if I am really that serious as to be coming to this decision in the first place.

If you mean as to whether or not it is worth it in the case of divorce if you are worried about it coming back on you, student loan debt is actually a special case. It generally does not get counted in the marital debts and sticks with the person who took the loan out. You don't need a pre-nup to deal with it necessarily. There are a few exceptions to this -- but for the most part not something to worry about. Granted, if you are married it will be something you will have to deal with until a divorce (if/when that happens).

I was in that situation. Had 2 kids within 3 years of graduating and I wrote those checks. It is the cost of doing business.

Same as buying a business with a strong product offering but poor cash flow and lots of debt.

In all fairness, the rates and terms on student loans is better than anything you would get from a bank as a startup. It's up to you to generate the income to service those loans once you graduate, even if you don't work in your field.

Actually, it depends on the state in the US. Not sure how it works in the UK, but debt incurred during the marriage, I.E. student loan interest, does become marital debt in many states. Thus, a pre-nup would be needed to protect one's self from the legal responsibilities of those debts.

The student loan debt was your kids or your ex-wife's?

If she has a plan for it....and makes my d!ck hard and not my life.... then it wouldn't matter... however this chick doesn't make my d!ck hard so......

Its completely situational.. and this one is not the situation worth taking on.

If you want to talk, talk to your friends. If you want a girl to like you, listen to her, ask questions, and act like you are on the edge of your seat.

'Twas the Ex -wife's before she was an ex. She was a stay at home mother at the time. First 3 years of the marriage.

I was reading this, and it got me interested:

I was in a similar situation recently. And def was planning to commit.

Did it bother me? Yes, in the back of my mind it did bother me. Was it a deal breaker? No (depending on a few factors I will touch on in a moment).

Ideally, I would like a woman that can complement my life. This includes my financial goals. I also want a woman that has her life "together" which plays as a factor in whether it is a deal-breaker or not.

If a woman has an outstanding amount of student debt but:

1) Is not currently on a plan to be debt-free, or at the very least has a plan laid out - > Deal breaker
2) Simply does not care or think it's a big deal - > Not gonna fly with me
3) Has and applies knowledge about the importance of being debt-free - > Not aligned with my vision

In conclusion, it is quite subjective because ideally, you want to commit to someone who has the same or similar goal, values, principles, and vision as you. Being financially educated and aware is one of my high standards. By the same token, we are all conditioned (brainwashed) to think standardized education is the way and going in great lengths like going on unreasonable debt is the way for a "happy and normal" life. Therefore, we cannot judge someone for being in debt when that is what we are conditioned to think is normal.

At the end of the day, you need to evaluate their life vision and see if it aligns with yours. Does it compliment it or does it obstruct it?

There will be your answer.

@MatureDJ's article profiles a 53 year old woman. Few men are looking to wife up a 53 year old woman. She's not even a good looking 53 year old woman. She's making over $100,000 at age 53, which isn't bad at all.

The woman in the article is a PhD dropout. She completed a bachelor's and a master's degree. She's also Gen X and went to school when tuition costs were less expensive. She made bad financial decisions and has let her debt grow.

I'm a Millennial, born near the beginning of the generation. People close to my age attended college in the 2000s as prices were escalating rapidly. If someone went beyond a BA/BS degree, graduate level programs compounded their educational costs. Unlike the Boomers and Gen X'ers, student debt is a much larger reality for us and now the up and coming Gen Z'ers.

If you've been a Millennial man dating Millennial women in the last 10-15 years, mostly every woman you'll meet has some student debt. The only women who don't have student debt are women who stopped their education once they finished high school, have a GED, or got some useful trade certification (typically medical assistant or dental hygienist) that they were able to pay off easily. The women who attended college but didn't finish, the women who got a bachelor's degree, and the women who have graduate level degrees, all have it. It is just a matter of how much debt.

Uncle Samo helps. The GF has around 40k for an MBA. She earns a decent amount (135k), but the payments are pretty high.
