I'm not american and I know the process only superficially, I tought you were gonna vote on november 3rd but I read on other forums about people voting already through mail, did I got it right?

Every state has different rules. Curiously, a member of the supreme court said fairly recently that the states do not have the right to dispute their election laws against the federal government. So the states make the election laws, everyone sues everyone else afterward, and ultimately the federal supreme court sorts it out.

The electoral college system makes the vote for president not matter at all for a lot of people. My state contains Chicago, and therefore the democratic nominee for president will always win the state. And it is winner take all for each state. People here get in nasty arguments about who each one will vote for, yet it does not matter at all.

We're suposed to be the shining star of democracy, but the system is very un democratic. It is legal for the state house/senate of each state to refuse to certify the election results, and instead appoint their own choice of persons as the electors to cast the votes of the state in the electoral college. If the election is close, that may happen, and I think it would create a lot of social unrest. Kids grow up getting taught that we are a democracy, but it was never set up that way.

If either candidate loses by a landslide and concedes, we could know on election night. But what will probably happen is that there will be a ton of lawsuits everywhere over the counting of mail in ballots, and then it would probably ultimately be decided by the supreme court, like Bush v gore in 2000. Each justice voted for the political party that put them on the bench in that case. We still pretend that the court isn't political, but obviously it is.

Ok, this is how it works.

When do Americans vote?
November 3rd is election day
Each state has its own voting laws. Some are allowing mail-in ballots without an absentee excuse. Others also allow early voting in person. On November 3rd every state and precinct will have open in person voting.

What will Americans vote on?
All voters will vote on the Presidential race and their Representative for Congress. Some will vote on Senator. Some locations will also vote on local elections. In my state voters in 4 cities will also vote on whether to allow a casino in their city.

What is the Electoral College?
The Electoral College actually elects the President. Voters are actually determining which electoral college delegates will be selected. Example: Virginia has 13 electoral votes. So a voter in Virginia will vote either Trump/Pence, Biden/Harris, etc. If Trump receives 1.3 million votes in Virginia and Biden receives 1.2 million votes then Trump wins Virginia's electoral votes. Thirteen delegates pledged to vote Trump would be selected, basically.

That is why "battleground" states matter. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win. States like Florida can go either way and have a lot of electoral votes due to its population size.


When will we know who won?
Usually election night or the following morning. It could go like the 2000 election though. The election was so close that there was a fight over some incorrectly completed ballots in Florida. We didn't know whether Bush or Gore won for weeks.

All registered voters (everyone with a driver license or state ID is eligible for automatic registration) received a certified paper ballot 5 weeks before Election Day. I voted over a month ago by returning it to my county election office.

On the ballot was U.S. President, U.S. House (lower chamber), U.S. Senate (upper house), municipal positions (city council & school board), and 3 state ballot questions one was legalization of marijuana.

Important point:
Anyone who says the U.S. is not a democracy is full of shvt. The President and Supreme Court are the only offices we don’t directly vote on, but they are both indirectly determined by people’s vote. Every other position I listed on my ballot is majority wins. A Republic is a representative democracy. Corporate propaganda has a lot of U.S. citizens confused on fundamentals of civics.

I'm reading that is highly we may not know for a bit due to sheer number of mail-in ballots this year. There also seems to be a real possibility of 269-269 Electoral vote tie. In that scenario it won't be pretty.

What happens if there is a tie? I
t goes to the House of Representatives. Currently Democrats control the House, but that doesn't matter. The House vote for President goes by state. So, if the majority of Florida Congressmen are Republican, then that would likely count as a vote for Trump. Republicans currently control 26 state delegations to the House of Representatives. Democrats control 23.
But, wait! There's more! Electoral College results aren't read to the Senate until after the new Congress is sworn in on January 3rd. So, it would be the new Congress that votes for President if there is a tie. So, if Democrats flipped seats in a few states you could end up with a 25-25 tie in the House. What happens then? They keep voting over and over until someone wins. If no President has been elected by inauguration day, then the Senate elects a Vice President by simple 51 majority and he acts as President until the House gets its act together and elects a President.

At least your vote somewhat matters, in Canada due to the high population in the East and low populations in the west, the election is already decided by the time the vote reaches Winnipeg, Alberta and BC votes don't matter, as a result we get the poop end of the stick in provincial federal policy.
