Just curious....

This is more for the Americans and Canadians on this board since we are mostly a European mix.

For example, I am 50% Italian, 25% Polish, 12.5% Irish, 6.5% English and like another 5-6% Jewish.

I have a big Irish surname, but I am only 1/8 Irish . I mean, to me, 12.5% is very small and barely worth mentioning.

What about 25%, still small or a decent chunk? I almost feel like 25% is also small to be connected to your ethnic background.

I mean, can someone who is only 25% Polish, consider themselves Polish-American?

IMHO, maybe at 30 % you feel connected with that ethnic group.

Thoughts?

Do you identify with the sufferings of the Jews in the past because of that 5% Jewish identity?

There are a lot of White and Black Americans who identify with being Native despite negligible blood quantum and connection to that heritage.

I think it depends on the coolness cachet and how much open connection you can get away with claiming. For example White Americans down South probably have some Black heritage as well as Native BUT there are plenty of Black people around telling them not to be so stupid if they started calling themselves Black. Not too many Indians around so they can cosplay all they want.

For your example I think there is more coolness connected with Italian and Irish than Polish and English so people in your shoes will go that way.

Interesting topic. I myself took the ancestry recently and found out to be 83% West African, 16% European, and 1% Indigenous American.

Of the African over 40% was Nigeria. I can definitely identify with that as some of my friends are Nigerian Americans (parents are immigrants) and they always speculated based off facial features I was significant shared lineage. Guess they were right.

Of the European, most was England and European Jewish. The English makes a ton of sense given my last name etymology but the Jewish was surprising. Can’t say I identify with either as United States society sees me and will always see me as a black man.

That's cool that you can trace it to Nigeria. One of the bum raps about being a descendant of slaves is not knowing exactly where in Africa you might have been from, though obviously West Africa makes the most sense. It leads to a lot of westerners thinking of Africa as a monolithic place instead of a continent with 54 nations. Of course politically it looked a lot different 300-400 years ago, with a lot of ancient kingdoms and tribes still banging around.
Well, you are 100% correct we take it with a grain of salt. It means “descended from the region that is now present-day Nigeria.”

What was also fascinating was it pinpointed we arrived in the US in North Carolina <1700.

Not much as most of the WHITES nowadays are white anti-whites...for a buck, it pays, because whites do not control their countries anymore...there's an Established Religion of Political Correctness superimposed for a few decades now. It used to be "Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity..." pushed, now only "Equality" remains as an objective or "purpose" for this and other White countries.

Now with that out of the way, I don't identify with the last three German, Sweden, Norway ~ 11%, but the first 2 of England/Wales & Ireland/Scotland or the Island.

Throughout history different ethnics responded differently to impending doom on their territories. For instance, France (Latin) rolled over or "Quit" when Germany entered their territory in WWII. A hornets nest was stirred when Japan struck our country. Italy (Mussolini) could not crack a much Smaller force in Greece, which p!ssed off Hitler cause he had to do the job which cost him an early surprise, a 4 month delay, in striking Russia. Finland repelled a much larger Russian invasion. Finland's summoning of strength in defense of territory is unlike any other, except maybe Sparta? Also, Great Britain could have folded to Germany as they were the only ones left to stop their progression north, but they fought like Hell. Small Czechs also gave Hitler fits in defense of territory, delaying his attack on the Soviets. The Soviets lost 600,000 in the Crimea war 1849, mainly cause they disregarded rifles thinking they only needed the bayonet - their rifles were even worse than Davy Crocket's old musket.

IMO it's not a matter of ethnicity, it's more a matter of family. If your family preserves the culture of a mother country then you will identify with it. I'm part spanish but I have zero association with spain because none of my family observe the culture.
