As I entered my 30s, I became aware of how annoying and prevalent male pattern balding is. My hairline had a brief receding period in my early 20s and stopped. I remember being teased by my peers as if they were permanently immune to balding. By 30, a few of them had some serious balding, one was even almost completely bald. And my hair remained at the Norwood 2 (if anyone here knows what that is). And now, I have noticed an increase in the number of men starting their trip down the balding journey.

Earlier this week, my best friend was dumped for having a noticeable, though minor, thinning spot on the back/top of his head. He's 36; she's 32. This has hit him pretty hard. He picked me up at the airport wearing a ball cap. Never seen this guy wear a hat, ever. He's got a supply of rogaine to last a year. And this guy is just broken now. He knew about this balding spot starting to form about a year ago and didn't seem too concerned about it. His girlfriend said she didn't care either...until he buzzed his hair last week. Apparently she told him that he just looked...different without hair, and although he's not bald now, she has had a glimpse at how he will look one day, and she knew she just wouldn't be attracted to him and it would be embarrassing to be seen with him.

Ok, so first, I'm pissed that this happened to my friend. But what I'm really pissed about is this lady gave me some real $hit about me saying women should make it a priority to stay a healthy weight if they want to keep me around and have a healthy sex life. My friend and I talk about this all the time, but he remained silent during this debate with his girlfriend. I only brought it up because she made a comment about him needing to stop his ice cream cone binges because he was losing his six pack. I couldn't help but call her out on her being 30lbs overweight and thus having a double standard. Basically she said a woman is built to be curvy and I wasnt understanding about it and probably need a smaller woman because I feel small. At 6'1' 195 lbs and 33 inch waist?

But here she goes dropping my best friend like a hot potato over a thinning hair spot on the back of his head. Something he has no control over, unlike excessive weight gain which is reversible and only happens when you choose to shove too much food down your pie hole.

I cannot wrap my head around this. I guess it's good timing that I have recently given up on women being more than an hour of sexy time. Looked in the mirror when I got out of the shower this morning and thought my hairline has started thinning again. Maybe I should buzz my hair and see who still decides to date me.

I really love my hair though. And that has me thinking of something more valuable to me than women - my hair lol. It really has me thinking about what if I go bald. I mean I think I would really be depressed, not because of what anyone thinks about it, but just because it's my hair. It's like losing a limb. Well, not really. But I just remember being obsessed with how awesome my hair was when I was in high school. So I guess it's the realization that my youthful days are coming to an end sometime soon.

There are several posters that I know of on this board that are bald, myself included, and we still meet and game women.

Would I be getting more women if I had hair? Probably, but I don't concern myself with this. I'd be getting more chicks if I was taller and more handsome, too.

If a chick dumped me for going bald, I'd be thankful that she showed her shallow nature sooner, rather than later.

This has little to do with balding in my opinion. She had someone else lined up and was waiting for any excuse to switch branches. Let me guess, this guy was the 'perfect' bf who never stood his ground and let her walk all over him and did everything she said. She had probably been trying to find fault for ages and couldn't, so went with the lame excuse of him going bald instead of being honest and saying he wasn't man enough for her.

Skroo- no disrespect to your friend, but if he was this upset then the guy has some self-confidence issues. I wonder if that helped lead to his demise? The key to life is not caring what others think of you.

I shaved mine off at age 33. There is definitely a segment of women that find bald dudes pretty hot. Its nothing to worry about. There are plenty of Hollywood actors and singers that are bald. As long as that's the case, every thing will be fine.

That's horrible. She's horrible. It sucks that he wanted good time in her but thank goodness he didn't marry her, she would have never been happy with him. She's not mature enough for him. He can do better.

IMO most females don't care about balding. In fact, if you are seriously receding, I strongly urge you to shave your head, and keep it shaved. Bald heads are masculine.

She sounds like a horrible shallow person.

Hair is nice but it's certainly not a deal breaker when considering the total package. We women have to deal with cellulite and if men dumped us just for that well most women would be single lol.

There are some fine looking men walking around with thinning/no hair.

What happened to your friend is not the norm. He is better off without someone like that and so is any guy.

What a witch! He's better without her to be sure. I think the weight comment was fine in response.

My ex husband went largely bald while we were married. It never affected my attraction to him at all. He keeps what he has left cropped very close & he still has an attractive face & great style. He still attracts women with no problem.

We've chatted about the hair thing before. He's been open about feeling freaked out about his hair going when it was going. He said it felt like he was losing his youth and identity, that it's tough seeing someone who looks different looking back at you from the mirror. He did Rogaine for a bit but we were having children in those days and he stopped the Rogaine in order to prevent exposing me.

It's hard for guys. Obviously it's a thing that can really mess with a man's self esteem, especially true of men who are a little on the vain side to start with. Just be encouraging to your buddy & relaxed about yourself.

Women who care don't care about your hair.

Interestingly, I get more attention now that I shave my head than before when I had hair. Women have told me I look more like a bad @ss mothaf**ka.

OP, you and your buddy are quite naive. He didn't get dumped for a bald spot. Haha.
She said she didn't like how he looks without hair, not because he has a bald spot forming. Obviously she didn't love the guy. She was always really vain and superficial. My friend is a good looking guy but honestly he does look pretty goofy without hair lol. Tall pointy head with some dents and ears that stick out. But not sure why everyone thinks someone wouldn't be this shallow. People get dumped for all kinds of reasons. I bet dudes on here would be shallow enough to drop a chick because she shaved her head or started going bald. Ya women lose their hair too.

I had my hair buzzed for several years. I grew it out for a change and the hairline wasn't obvious. I actually like how my hairline formed in my early 20s. Has the V look. It wasn't until I cut it really short a few months ago l that I noticed it seemed to start thinning though not receding.

He's a pretty ****y guy. I think this was kind of a shock to him. So ya he's definitely lost some confidence lol. I would say it's more likely if he did get dumped for something other than his hair it's because he can be on the unreasonable bossy side.

Certainly sucks. I have also started to lose my hair and although I don't care/worry about it enough to go for potions/treatments and all that other bull****, I do think I look far better with hair. That said losing your hair shouldn't doom you into a life of loneliness....unless you allow it to. I suppose it may be a deal breaker for very young girls, but far more women than you'd suspect couldn't careless. Don't be fooled by all the commercials and advertisements about it - they are selling products. If push comes to shove just shave it short.

I have been on plenty of first dates with women who have absolutley have no filter, go on racist rants, complain about bald guys, short guys, fat dudes. I immediately disqualify them for LTR material. Who opens with that **** on a 1st date. I went out with a girl on five dates and she said hey you got heavy bags under your eyes, I should give you a cream I use. I told her I couldnt see her anymore because her vagina was too loose because of all the dildos she puts in her. I was already looking for a way out and the bags under my eyes insult was the last straw. Your friend is lucky he discovered this early. he got dumped because he is balding. bitches be shallow.

As a guy who's balding and gone from lax shaving (every ~2 weeks) to every 3-4 days - it definitely pays to keep it shaved clean. Along with hitting the gym - I've been getting plenty more attention and positive feedback. Even from guys (more friendly). Also, I see some guys with the half balding look (side hair, top bald) - and I can't help but think it looks not good at all (I'm biased but still). Shaved tells you take care of yourself too I think along with looking much better (for most).

Some girls like and prefer the shaved look. Some girls like short hair, or wild long hair. Just as you probably have preferences for a girl's hair general look. You're just hitting a different end of the spectrum.

If you're going bald, do a Bruce Willis or Vin Diesel - all the way.
