You gave the evolutionary reason why women are valued more highly, here's a more practical reason.
First off, we're mainly talking about attractive women being more highly valued. And attractive women are generally considered to be in the 18-24 year old range. According to Mystery anyway (not sure what age he was when he said that, pretty sure he was in his 20s himself).

Anyway, that's a fairly small segment of the female population, but they are desired by men of all age groups. So that's a fairly small number of women being desired by a large number of men. Supply and demand. Young, attractive women are in high demand, thus they are valued highly.

If you took women as a whole, including the 84 year old ladies in nursing homes, things tend to even out more.
